Living in Asia, so looking for a decent alarm system. Most of the ones on Amazon are geared towards modern cars - don't think my 356 engine will start no matter how many buttons on the remote I press - ha.

Likewise don't really need a remote door unlock for my convertible.. yeah right.

I don't think I've EVER heard a car alarm go off here. It might annoy the neighbors so much they might just come outside and shoot me.. doh.. So looking for something that just flashes the lights if touched (a lot of people come by and touch and look at the car when parked and I'm in a bar)..

Really would be more interested in a kill switch, or RFID kind of thing that will only let it start when I'm nearby.. Or a GPS tracker so I can find it if it's stolen. However it would need to be hardwired and I'd get a local SIM. Not really interested in paying $25 a month and having to remove the device ever 3 days to charge it..

Any ideas for something decent in the $50 - $200 range?

Thanks.

Hello Blackrice, I just finished installing this one :

https://www.amazon.com/Motorcy...=spy+5000m&psc=1

It has a 2 way remotes, microwave detector, kill switch and you can hook up the flasher wires to it so that it will blink all 4 flashers when somebody get too close to "your precious"

I did not plug the alarm speaker to it so right now only the car blinker flashes and my remote is beeping when the car gets too much attention. That way I can get back to the car and "offer assistance".

The installation and wiring is very simple (12vdc Red&Black, Flashers Yellow, Brown kill switch)

The remote is normal sized probably like your door remote. The bike picture on the remote ... well i will have to live with it :->

I want to take the "geekiness" to another level soon and add a module to text my phone instead of carrying the remote with me.

So i may add a relay on the speaker wire of the SPY 5000m that lead to the SOS wire of this gadget : https://www.amazon.com/CULER-V...motorcycle+GSM+alarm

The drawback of SMS & tracking is the fact the fact that I will need a valid pre-paid 3G sim card. This thing will really be useful two or three times a  year so I am not convinced about a monthly fee to sleep better on those few occasions. The pre-paid card can run cheap (5 to 10$ a month) and would keep me from carrying the remote around.

Cool - I bought this on Amazon - will let you know how it goes. Thanks!

Back when I was in NJ Replicar Club we had a member a true gentleman, Michel Burrel that had a very heavy French accent. At a car show a kid went up to his car and tried to climb into ( over) it with the soles of his shoes.  Michel slowly rose from his chair going into a spirited scream that began as a low pitch and accelerated through every octave known to man kind, the funny thing was it was in french with a singled out a word here and there that was clearly in broken English.........I'll never forget that :~)

Love the Michel story! Thanks Al!

I always let kids take pics in my old cars. Unless they try to get in without permission! Then they get a polite decline. (And maybe learn a lesson, but who knows?)

Of course then there was my friend who let his toddler use the fender of my MG TD as a slide. That ended in a brief, shall we say "animated," conversation with the friend!

If it were me I would have started the curt discussion with WTF are you doing?!!!

I would do it with a bluetooth receiver. It will detect your phone into a ~30 foot radius and you can wire it to a bigger relay that will act as a kill switch to ground the coil.

This will do all the brain work for you : http://www.ebay.com/itm/12V-1A...9:g:IeIAAOSwknJXxm4Q

So wire the beefier relay to the normally open wires and the relay will trip and "unground" the coil when your phone is in range.

This looks all easy and cool until you start thinking of the safety and logic aspect ... what if your phone battery gave up as you drive on the interstate ??? what if you need to bring the car for maintenance or use valet parking (yeah ! over my dead body but just ... IF). You may need to look into a bypass switch to activate that relay (short red and green on this controller), if you need somebody to move the car without you if if your phone is about to die.

Another approach would be RFID into the driver seat :-> all you need is an RFID tag into your wallet and would not have to worry about having the phone in good shape and can loan the RFID tag to somebody who need to move the car if needed. This would require some sort of arduino or raspberry PI linux board to read&learn the RFID  tags turning this project into a geek school project :->. Their is "long range" RFID out there, I have done 3-4 foot reliably so in the seat, side door or under dash may be doable.

Hi All,

I'm Mark from Sydney Australia and completely new to the world of speedsters.

Sorry for being off topic but this seems a forum with people online.

Currently I'm restoring my '62 Harley duo glide , but when that's done I need a new project.

Always had the speedster high in my" favourite cars of all time" list, and love to own one,but am not sure where to start ,what kits are out there , with the costs / quality to consider. And  I should I buy a kit or already build one by either a company or private builder .

Most activity from what I've seen so far regarding builders suppliers, and  owners seem to be in the U.S , and I wonder if there are other Aussies in this club that could give me advise me on what way to go, especially regarding local laws. and import cost and procedures.

any advise most appreciated!

Jeff, The Bluetooth network can be secured with a password. So only phones with that password would be able to connect to it. The others will see the network but wont be able to connect to it.

if they guessed what you did to the car they would need to get close enough to the car and spend time to try to crack the code before being able to activate it. This is where the low tech Glock comes in play.

@mark ter laak

Probably should have started a new thread with your questions. But in an effort to answer your question about other Aussies on here go to the top of the page in the black header and click on "MEMBERS". Another page will open and in tiny writing you will see "SORT BY NAME" just above the third avatar. Click on that and a drop down box will open. Click on "VIEW AS MAP". When the map opens find your region and see who the members are. You can PM them and see if they are active and ask them what's legal in your area and if anything is available.

We've had other Aussies here and one of them bought a Speedster but couldn't import it due to your region's restrictions. make sure you find out what can be imported and what can't.
