My Im has an external oil cooler with a fan - that never worked. I did a bunch of back-bends trying to get that damn thing to work and finally gave up.  So along with the temperature gauge - that was worthless ( problems probably connected) , I took another approach. I simply added a Westach temp gauge and an on/off button above it for the fan. At last - a fan. Even in the blistering hot, sweating like a pig , deep south - the engine stays around 300 degrees. Yeah!

The only proper way, Carlo.

I first went to a simple toggle switch for the same reason. When I first got my VS, the fan would cycle on and off, but then stopped doing that. Was the thermostat defective or the fan?

For the new engine, I just skipped using a thermostat - one less thing to fail or leak. And I've found you really don't need to fiddle with the switch a lot. In cooler weather, I hardly ever need the fan. In warmer weather, I switch it on as the temp approaches mid-gauge and pretty much leave it on after that. Once hot, the oil seldom gets cool enough again that the fan isn't needed. And when the oil is still a little cool but you see a long, steep climb up ahead, you can turn the fan on a little early to get a jump on it.

Besides, toggle switches are just plain cool.

Oil temp at 300?

Yikes.

It's 95* outside today. I just got back from a 293 mi drive to/from/at Starved RockState Park. I averaged "a bit" over 80 mph on the highway (3/4 of the miles). My oil temps never got over 180*, unless I was kissing up on "the ton" on the interstate-- then they were 190*.

BTW: I averaged 27 mpg driving like I stole it.
