I will be doing a nice post about Carl Berry's memorial gathering later tonight, but I thought this might be important as the sons are having an estate company come in and liquidate whatever they can in the house in the coming two weeks.  To be honest, the volume of misc. parts is roughly the volume of my Speedster (honest!) and the vast majority is nickel-and-dime stuff that the estate guys can handle so I won't even try to remember that, but there are some major things the group might be interested in.

So before it gets liquidated, I'll try to remember the major things I saw when I went through everything with his son and see if anyone's interested, so here's the first biggies and I'll add more as I remember them:

A Speedster Hardtop.   Carl bought two tops and Dave Stroud got the other one so Dave can comment on difficulty to install/use it.  My guess on price would be around $800 plus shipping.

There's an entire kit to rework a swing arm frame to full IRS.

There's an engine stand starter adapter to start/run your engine on a test stand, complete with starter.

There is a never opened, HI-Torque starter.

There are 2 BN2 heaters and a B-4 heater, all complete with snorkels and exhaust pipes.  My heater thread will tell you how to get them going like champs.

Two complete sets of wheels in boxes - One chrome 10-slot (I think) with matching nipple/P-crest hubcaps, and another set that looks like ARS or BRM "Turbo" style forged aluminum - really light.

A complete set of 4 "Moon" hubcaps.

There is a set of 6 (six) Michelin 185 tires, never mounted.

There is a 1915cc (I think) engine - this is the one that backfired and he was afraid to start it again so it sat.  I personally believe that it is OK, but;

There is also a complete, new (in their boxes) set of Mahle piston/cylinders, ready to use.

There is what looks like an EJ-22 used Subaru engine still in shipping wrap.

I know he bought a Porsche 901 5-speed transaxle from a 912, but I didn't happen to see it.  We didn't get to look everywhere in two hours.

There's a complete MIG welder with stand and auto-helmet, still in boxes.

BTW:  Carl willed his 912E (and all spare parts for it) to the mechanic who had been keeping it going for him.  I thought that was nice and fitting.

So here's the deal.  One son is staying at the house and trying to get stuff organized over the next two weeks.  If you're interested in some of this stuff you MUST contact me before next Wednesday and I'll give you his contact info.  He's not trying to make a killing on this stuff, just trying to get a low, fair price.

If it must be shipped, YOU pay the shipping from Bethel, CT.  Pickups in person are fine, but he will return home to Florida in TWO WEEKS.

Don't drag your feet on this stuff - it's mostly stuff in never-opened boxes and it will be gone in a matter of days.  If you're interested in something or have been looking for something and can't find it, PM or email me.  You asking my jog my memory to whether he had something.

Yup, I saw them both.

The Beck, louvered, Carrera engine lid cover is there.  It is the outer skin only.  Carey at Special Edition can tell you how to remove the inner lid liner from your existing cover (about 30 minutes with a Dremel tool) and how to bond the louvered cover to what you have.  I would think $150 would be fair for that outer, louvered cover.

There is also an original, metal, twin-grill 356B cover that should be coveted, too.

All the above is true, but it only backfired once and scared him so much he didn't try to start it again, even though I tried to get him to try it, so then he got the other engine from Carey.   I suppose a known good was better than a questionable.

The boys got the car to Carl's mechanic who is doing the engine swap and one of the sons will be keeping it.  The engine going in is the engine from Beck and Carey is confirming what it is for them for the future.  I found a whole bunch of goodies for it in the pile - Welded/Balanced fan, Ignitions, Hex bar upgrade (from ME!) and that has all gone to the mechanic, too.

I've reminded them that one of the boxes has an engine stand starter adapter that could go to the mechanic to see if the original engine will start (I bet it will).  The story continues...

Looks like the Hi-Torque starter and chromed rims/tires might be spoken for, along with the luggage rack.

The Suby is there, if anyone is looking for a used one - would have to confirm what it is.   I've also got them looking for the 912/901 5-speed transaxle that I didn't see (but we ran out of time looking).

Honestly, I saw a whole lot of stuff in 2 hours flat and probably should have taken more pictures and notes, but they told me they would have the Estate people handle most of it so I was just separating things into 3 - 4 piles based on perceived value and keep-or-sell.

If you (anyone) is looking for something specific, PM me and ask.  It might jog my memory about what's there and I can confirm it.

Like the Harbor Freight hi-tech Bore-scope - A long fiber-optic camera that fits through a spark plug hole with a mini TV screen so you can illuminate and see what's in your cylinder.  I would use one once every thirty years, but someone on here might want one!

I just got a photo of the "Main interest" top, the one stored in the shed:

Carl's top

This one is the most complete with the rear window installed and it was in the shed.    It does not look like a Fibersteel.  A local 356'er suggested that It might be Plastic Dynamics or a no-name brand.  A Glasspar has small quarter-windows on the sides, so it's not one of those, either.  Anyone have any ideas on the maker?

The other one was stored out under his deck with no window installed, but there is a box with a rear window in the house.  We did not test it to see if it was for that top.  That second top (I don't yet have a photo, sorry) has a molded-in horizontal surface just above the center of the rear window apparently intended for a third brake light LED bar or a vent or something.  I'll try to get a photo soon.

For shipping estimates, it probably weighs 40-50 pounds, BUT it's big and awkward so the shipping (by size, more than weight) is a deal-killer.  If you live within a few hours of Danbury, CT, it is pretty attractive.

The one pictured does look like it fits a Cabriolet and NOT a Speedster  - since the front piece over the windshield is straight across and not curved down at the ends (to match a Speedsters curved windshield frame).

The other one (no picture)  with window currently out of it and the raised "third brake light" bit is for a Speedster.  It's made by Plastic Dynamics (wish I had bought a hundred - see ad.  Carl had a VS. David S has the matching one to it and mounted it to an early IM so it should fit a CMC. Carl bought the 2 of them together

OK, the gray one above (David's?) is the twin to the one under his deck - has the same little light bar flat over the rear window.  All they have to do is confirm that the window fits and sell it.

The black one is a mystery.  I'll see if anyone in my local club recognizes it, but if it fit a Cab (and it were a Glasspar) there should be a rear side window .  Here is a pair of Glasspars:

So it isn't that.  I'll ask if someone can get a photo of the emblem on the side - Maybe that'll tell us something.  It may not be for a 356 at all!

Gordon, you are doing a Herculean task! I visited Carl last September as you remember and not too many others have ever been allowed into Carl's inner sanctum. In fact, I only got to see his artistic endeavors and nothing of his auto parts section(s).

Everyone owes you a round of applause. I'm sure if you lived closer you'd be even more "Gordon-thorough" about all this.

Thanks for stepping up to the plate.

Rich

Good find, Greg.   I was wondering about that emblem, too - might be there as a trim piece on the outside, with a hold-down mechanism on the inside.  I'm hoping to get someone over there to take a look soon.

Either way, There are a couple of good tops for two different cars there waiting for new homes.  Heck!   Even if the Speedie top doesn't have a window (which I doubt but have to confirm), You could do a rear window out of Plexiglass for the price of half a sheet (like, under $60 bucks) plus a gasket from McMaster Carr!

Rich:  The pile of car stuff had been moved to what was once Carl's studio but was originally the 24 ft. square living room.  1/4 of the room was Graphic Arts stuff (incl. his table), 1/4 was automotive tools (mostly in unopened boxes), 1/4 was car parts and the last 1/4 was a huge pile of books (hundreds).  Other rooms were filled with books, too (after they moved the car parts all into one place).   Makes me want to, once again, go through our stuff here and downsize, downsize, downsize.  My shop, alone, will be a nightmare for Chris, someday.   I wanna see him move my 150 lb. blacksmith's anvil!!

I'm getting a slew of PM's and emails asking specifics so I want to clarify my role in this effort;

I only helped Carl's two sons organize their pile of car stuff and get some ball-park values for some of it (the big items).  The sons are using an estate liquidation firm to do the actual selling, allowing the estate people to set values on things they know, and contacting either me or others for the things the estate people don't know the value of.

I am not selling any of the items but I will provide contact info to those of you who PM or email me so that you can contact Matt Berry, who will, in turn, make your contact info known to the estate people and what you're interested in.  He doesn't need to be inundated with emails right now, so I'm being the filter.

For everyone who has contacted me, I've provided Matt's contact info and I will continue to do so.  I expect everything to be settled in a few weeks.

Hope this makes my role clearer.  I'm just trying to get them info on a lot of the stuff where I can, and pass along prospective buyers to them through the SOC.

I spoke with Carl's son, Matt, tonight. Matt is the son who resides in Florida. His other son lives in CT and would be the one who needs to take photos. Gordon is correct, he is just being kind enough to act as somewhat of the middle man, but too far away to get details now that he has returned home to MA.

Matt told me tonight that the estate people are just starting their inventory and that eventually many of the items will be visually available on their web page. I told Matt that I would be as helpful as I can from here in Wisconsin.

He did talk about the several sets of wheels that Carl had. I told him to somehow get somemore photos of as much of this stuff as possible. I know he had quite an inventory of small parts as well.

Post as many questions of what you guys might be looking for, Carl just might have had something you are looking for.

Matt, in the Tampa Bay area also has suggested that he wants to hook up with any of you guys in that area. He will be taking possesion of Carl's black Vintage once that CB Performance engine is installed.

Apparently Carl's mechanic did a compression check on the 1915cc engine that Carl felt had imploded. From what Matt told me, the mechanic found no compression. Perhaps we neec to get some contact with the guy, afterall, he did inherit Carl's 912 and would think that ne could offer some further advice.

It's a complicated scenario, but still maybe some bargains to be had before the estate sale starts.

This is Matt's e-mail address: mtndream3@yahoo.com...his phone number is: 727-710-1284 which might be the best to ask specific questions. He could then put you in touch with his other son for photographic references of your needs.

Well, the red top is cut from a Volkswagen sedan.  You prob'ly don't want that one

As you say, the white top looks as if it should fit, but without plopping it onto a Speedster as a rough size check I don't think we could tell.  I wish it were closer - I would drive Pearl down there.   Anyone live close to Bethel, CT?

To measure things, all I can think of is to drop a line from the top, center of the windshield down into the cockpit as a reference line, then pull a line/string from that reference line to the center, rear of the cockpit lip plus 2" (for the rear edge of the hard top).

Pull a third string across the body at the top rear of the doors right at the top corner.

The distances you want from this exercise are from the front vertical string to the one pulled across at the top rear of the doors, and the second one is from that vertical string to the point 2" beyond the cockpit rear lip.

With the top sitting on the driveway, duplicate the stuff above - a couple of tape measures should get you in the ballpark.  Prop up the front of the top, drop a tape from the foward center to the driveway, mark that spot.  Run a tape across at the corners where it meets the edge of the door.  Run the second tape from the spot to that second tape.  It should be close to the measurement from your car.  Push the tape all the way to the back lip (be careful not to move the top around).  Measuring from the spot to there should roughly match your car to 2" beyond the rear lip.

Remember - these are all ballpark measurements against your CMC/VS.   You WILL have to make adjustments to the top to make it fit your custom car.

I'll measured Pearl, just for the hell of it.  Sent you a PM, Bill, with the measurements and photos.
