With the rear wheels on jack stands I removed the brake drums, to replace the e-brake cables.

As long as I had them off I gave a quick coat of paint, outer surface only.

While waiting for parts to be delivered, I used this opportunity to adjust the valves.

I left the motor running and exited the car for fresh air (it's in the garage).

I noticed the rear axle turning ? WTH?

Back inside and went thru all the gears, finding  neutral  several times I thought.

Nope, axle turns no matter where I place the shifter.  What am I missing, or more importantly what did I mess up?

Stan;

Thanks for the assist.  I can relax now.

I was trying to get as many things done as time permits, with the back wheels off of the car.

Still a rookie, today was my first valve adjustment.  Easy.  The car fired up immediately so I figure I must have passed, at idle at least.

Next, new e-brake cables and new brake shoes for the rear.
