Nancy and I had a blast at the 2017 WCC despite one minor issue.

The drive up was great weather. Our little caravan consisted of Troy and Sally in their SUV and Teby in his Speedster. After we stopped in Cholame at the James Dean memorial we got word that Rusty and Donna weren't too far out so we waited for them and we finished the drive together. We headed into Morro Bay for some fresh fish at The Dockside Restaurant. A couple of seniors were providing karaoke entertainment. Teby did a quick dance routine "onstage" to get the crowd going.

Rolled in to the hotel later and said hi to the veterans that were there and then made sure to introduce myself to all the new crew. Enjoyed free drinks poolside while catching up with everyone and also looking over the cars in the p-lot.

Saturday's cruise was going famously up until the end. After leaving Halter Ranch winery a group of us decided to take the shorter drive back to the hotel and Teby was leading us along the route when his car suddenly died. Prior to that I was getting a mist on my windshield from an unknown substance. Turned out Teby's left rear tire rubbed a hole in one of the oil lines from the filter to the cooler. His car lost oil pressure and because of that his fuel pump, which was wired to shut off if oil pressure dropped, had turned off causing the car to run out of fuel. Also in our group was Troy and Sally in the SUV, Rusty and Donna, Dan and Shannon Stewart, and Les and Lee Munson. Little SLOFUZZ Ryan Cramer was riding with Teby. Everyone pulled to the side and after determining we were going to be there a minute we had all the ladies return to the hotel in Sally's SUV. Then the collective mind came up with a solution while Troy was already under the car pulling off the lines from the filter to the cooler and routed the filter back to the filter thereby bypassing the cooler. We scrounged up enough oil to fill the crankcase and off we went.

Things were looking good for the drive back to the hotel when all of a sudden my car was running real sluggish. It felt like the engine was running on only two cylinders. Since Sally left in the SUV I had Troy with me and he looked over and asked if everything was good and I said, "No, the car's running poorly.". Teby and Dan were ahead of us and didn't see me pull off the freeway and they continued on. Rusty and Les exited the freeway behind me and as I came to a stop I saw flames coming out of the engine grill. I calmly told Troy the car was on fire so we got out of the car. I removed my personal belongings out of the car and dialed up Carey to order a new Beck (just kidding about that part) while Rusty ran over with his HalGuard fire extinguisher and shot in a blast through the sides of the grill. Troy opened the lid and Rusty hit it again with the extinguisher and all was good. The left side air filter had caught on fire after a backfire but it wasn't burning too hot so it hadn't flared up too fast and ignited the fiberglass. I disassembled the remaining bits of the filter and top cap. When I started the car again Troy saw fuel coming out of the idle jet circuit. After a quick call to Pat D who confirmed the likelihood of a clogged idle jet I removed the Jet Doctors and cleaned up the jets. Troy suggested a piece of wire but all I could find was the staple from our route packet. It worked because when I got it all back together there was no leaking fuel. We managed to make it back to the hotel in time for dinner and the raffle. The next day Teby and I made it the 155 miles home without a problem.

I've since removed and cleaned all of the idle jets and replaced the air filters with new fire resistant air filters from CB Performance. They have a wire mesh lining on the inside to reduce the chance of fire. I wiped the soot off all the metal bits and the underside of the engine lid. There is some discoloration on the top of the lid that Anand is going to try and get out with a good detail job. If not I'll get the lid resprayed.

All in all though it was still a great trip. Great company, great drive, good wines, good food, and time away from work.

It's not Halon. It uses the Halotron 1 agent. Just google Halguard. I bought the 1.4 lb extinguisher.

Robert's car was pretty scary. I'm thinking of adding one of those tube things under my deck lid. If the fiberglass had caught it would have gone up like a tumbleweed and we would have had us a nice pre 4th of July show. The mag case would have really added to the excitement!

@Robert M Hey can you get Pat and CB to sell our group those filters?

Hey can you post a link to those fire retardant air filters?

Rusty where did you get the Halon Extinguisher?

Google HalGuard and you'll see they sell them all over the web and at authorized retail establishment. They have the extinguishers in chrome, black, and red. The prices descend in the same order with chrome being the most expensive. They can be recharged by any certified fire extinguisher business with that chemical agent. If you go to the HalGuard website you can put in your zip code to see if there is a retail store near you and to see who can service the extinguisher if you use it.

The engine lid has been detailed and it looks like new:

I should have taken a picture immediately after the fire and before I wiped it down with just a smidgen of acetone. I thought it would have to be re-sprayed or wet sanded. Then it cleaned up to what you see in the first photo and then what Anand did to it with his detailing skills.

I just need to get the grilled cleaned up now with the acetone. The grill badges got some patina out of it though.

Seriously?  Your making Rusty out to be a hero for putting out your engine fire?  The truth is, HELLO!  HE COST YOU A BRAND NEW SPEEDSTER!!!

Just kidding of course.  he really was a hero and we now forgive him for all the nasty comments he made about Fresno and the Central valley.

Hey Troy is the day saver. Anyone can use a fire extinguisher. Troy got up under Teby's car when the only thing holding it up was a flimsy scissor lift and a rock behind the tire to keep it steady - and it wasn't very steady. Armed with only a crescent wrench and a pair of pliers This Guy began rerouting oil lines in a sensible way that would get Teby home again. I chewed off all my fingernails watching him and was nearly through half my toenails when he yelled from beneath the car that he got it! He's the real hero here people not me.

Mitch can you please find some sort of Super Mechanic Guy picture and make a trophy for Troy? I will cherish my trophy for a lifetime!

@Robert M

Robert I am so sorry man. I just didn't think it all the way through. Let this be a lesson to the rest of us. ALWAYS ASK 1ST BEFORE SAVING SOMEONE ELSES CAR! Also, if you are the only one with a fire extinguisher in the situation take a moment and negotiate a deal before going into action. Hindsight is always 20/20...
