David:  Once imported as a 1966 VW, all you take to the MOT to get it registered and licensed is paper work.  When I came through customs with my first IM, they wanted the paper work, so they could cover their you know what.  No one has to actually see the car.

Unless the rules of the game have changed (and that needs to be checked for sure), a 1966 VW registration in the U.S. becomes the same in Canada.

I was also told ( way back in 2010 ) by the Canada Border people that if a replica on a VW chassis comes into Canada titled as a VW and using the original VIN on that VW chassis it would be refused entry into Canada. You don't even get through the border...period. It is simply recognized by the Border people as something other than a VW and does not qualify for entry.

This is just what I was told back then and things may have changed.

The authorities sometimes do strange things and sometimes it's better to not ask why. Recently I bought an Intermeccanica out in British Columbia from Ron Leonard. I get the car home with lots of paperwork from Ron, get a safety check done on the car and insurance coverage and go to the local Service Ontario office ( DMV in the States ). The car was listed for $29,900 and I bought it for and had a receipt for the exact sale price which was a few thou less. The Bytch at the Service Ontario says I need to get an appraisal for the car. Around the corner I go and pay $60 and get an appraisal for $21,200 and go back to see her. I still pay the tax on the stated sale price though. So, In a nutshell, I pay $60 to cover her ass. Now...the car gets transferred into my name and I get home to sort through the paperwork and file it away.

Here's the kicker, they have the sales receipt for the taxes ( 13% ) with me as the new owner and the seller as Richard Jobin, not Ron Leonard. Richard Jobin lives in Ontario and sold the car to Ron. Did I go back and ask them why that happened ?...no, no, no. Did she do me some favour in bypassing an out of Province seller in this case ? Who knows.
