The nerf bars in the picture come from Empi and are pre drilled with mounting holes. The car owner just bolted them up without modifying them in any way. The normal way is to drill new mounting holes in the correct place, so they are much closer to the body and cut about 5 or 6 inches off the bottom of the vertical bars. Don't cut anything off the top.
