Unless you have very wide or unusual dished rims, the original builder probably used the stock width axel. Even with the stock width and 5.5" rims the front wheels will sit quite a bit back in the wheel wheels. I have front disk brakes and added 1/2" spacers so rims (ET40) clear the calipers.
Are you saying your front end sits too low? If so it was adjusted that way or the clamps were loosened and the torsion bars perhaps aren't secure at desired setting.
