CMC's all came with a substantial steel welded subframe bonded (epoxy and rivets) to the fiberglass body. Below is one from a burned CMC. This sub-chassis greatly increases the strength of the OEM shortened VW pan. In 1988 the classic CMC kit sold for $7795 plus over $1k for shipping (that's for black gel coat so white maybe $2-300 less). So you would have to get a VW T1/Ghia pan - but you need suspension/engine/trans/wheels anyhow.
