In California, and every other state (IIRC), the use of any forward facing light that isn't white, yellow, or amber is illegal. Red forward facing lights are definitely illegal. Red lighting can only be used for the rear side markers and rear facing lights. The white headlight is preferred but yellow is allowed but it's very rare. Amber is for front side marker lights, front marker lights, and turn signals.

Don't forget the "blue lights," Bob. You know in CA they're as much a "no-no" as "red lights" are. I can't recall when the "blues" were added to the "reds" on patrol cars. I do remember, though, when I got my Learner's Permit the only thing I had to watch out for was one flashing red light on the roof of a B&W Ford.
