I'm poor too! But I am mechanically inclined sooo...
I bought mine for $3000.00 unassembled off of ebay. Only things missing were the front bumper, windshield (glass only) and motor. For 5-6K I'll have what I want and can do it in payments. Given the payments will be made to the local VW shop :).

Look around, there are several unfinished kits floating around. Might be the way to go.
