Instant “Sunburn”

So...........I’ve been trying to get the time to do my usual Spring Tune Up on Pearl and she has been running yucky, but I attributed that to last year’s stabilized gas, etc.  l only had 1/4 tank left so I blasted down to Thompson Speedway in Connecticut, taking back roads down and I395 and RT 20 back til running on “Reserve”, gave her a full tank (6.7 Galleones) of Sunoco 93 and drove home to sync the carbs.

Did all the preliminary stuff days ago, like setting valve lash (loose zero on all 8), setting the timing 32°@3k rpm) but skipped the float level jazz figuring it’s not gonna change from when I did them last year unless the floats sink and then it would really run like 🐳 poop.

Using the detailed (and copyrighted) DIY instructions from Danny Piperato’s “How to sync your Weber Carbs (Dellortos, too, If You Must)”, I got everything re-sync’ed and purring like my daughter’s 20 pound “Coon Cat” (which is actually more of an adenoid growl than a purr, but at least he hasn’t tried swatting me yet - Damn thing is bigger than my Jack Russell was).   Had one link adjuster that was persnickity but I finally figured out what was going on (twist the link and the vibration would let it loosen up) and then she sync’ed right up.

SUCCESS!!!!!!  ( God, I LOVE success!)

Except for one smallish thing........

One tends to stand just off to the side at the rear to push the snail-meter-thingie into the carb throats and that is precisely where my dual on-the-side exhaust exits, along with the forced hot air coming down off the heads and down and out at the rear........Right where I would stand.  I noticed my ankles were getting a tad warm/hot (It is officially “Summer” here at Five Cent Racing’s Aircooled Division and I was in Pit/Cargo Shorts), but totally did not expect an instant Sunburn on them.

Ye-ouch!!!

I’m hoping it fades into a beautiful olive tan like my Italian neighbor, Gina Italiano, has.  That would be super-cool but, being Irish, that ain’t evah gonnah happen.

Happy Summer, everyone!
