That's got some meat on the tires -guess black Fuchs make them look larger.

I suspect the leather traps were in case you had a minor shunt on race course and bent something. You can finish the race and bang it back where if the hood blocked your vision you were in deep do-do. Kind of like hood pins on muscle cars. No duct tape back then.
