Bruce, the thin nuts that SE uses for their top clips fit just fine. The rubber windshield gasket deforms a little and the frame with nuts sticking out slides over. Of course, I cut the extra threads off with my Dremel cut-off wheel.

I do appreciate your ingenuity, but I think it isn't necessary.
