^ Exactly.

Oil is going to run out. A half-twist on a sideways filter sends the oil straight down. A half twist on a vertical filter sends the oil all over the outside of the filter, where it drops off the bottom. When it stops draining, I'm spinning off a clean filter - the guy with the vertical filter is spinning off an oil-covered mess.
