I installed one of the brass bushings. Be sure to get their overpriced installation tool.

You will be able to push the shift rod far enough forward to come out of the bushing without removing the plate in the front.

I looped a string under the rod before I pulled it out of the bushing so I could lift it up when time to stick it back through the bushing.
