I won't comment to the word   obsession    but I had several decent reasons for doing a hardtop. I really prefer to drive with the top down in good weather.

My Speedster convertible roof was low and we put plenty of miles on the car in various weather conditions. Knowing we might drive into some inclement weather, it was comforting to know for a certain trip we would enjoy the added headroom with the hardtop. We like to holiday in Wells, Maine in the Fall. With a hardtop on hand, if the weather looked a bit dicey we could still go and enjoy the trip. No hardtop and a good chance of rainy days on the trip we'd likely cancel. No need to now.

Carl Berry and I became pretty good friends ( RIP Carl ) in the short time that I knew him.  He muckled onto two hardtops in Cali. He had one shipped to him in CT and one for me shipped to upstate NY. Both came via Greyhound bus on the cheap in bubble wrap. Hilarious when you think about it. I felt obligated to Carl to get my top done and installed soon. He was pleased to see it done.

Thirdly, why be "normal" ? It's nice to have the option of the hardtop. Plenty of people saw it and I got good compliments about it. A bad thing ?  No obsession, but nice to do and have the option.
