Originally, the 550 was aluminum. The 356 Speedster was steel.

Pay attention to what Danny P says about thinning down or tapering the longs - the door sills are absurdly wide on pan-based replicas, necessitating running very narrow seats. It wouldn't be that hard to fix, and yet nobody's ever done it.
