Thank you Ray, Al, Stan.  Yeah I know a little about this and the reference you referred to, Ray, and your explanations, Stan,  are correct. For me, Horsepower rules, but only from the application of it in a vehicle. Torque exists with out RPM. Electric motor torque is measured at stall speed for example. So are Gas Turbine engines. When torque moves, such as with RPM, then work occurs. When work occurs from torque and RPM, Horsepower happens.  But, torque is useless to produce work without some movement. When movement exists Horsepower happens. Marginally, horsepower wins with RPM. Torque numbers are a dynamic function of the moving mass. For example, a Diesel engine has extremely heavy moving parts and usually, the torque is high at low rpm. Horsepower is low.  

Torque can occur without movement but work happens with Horsepower derived from RPM. In Physics terms it would be the "rate".

I venture that a fuel dragster accelerating 1000 ft in 3-4 seconds didn't happen with torque.

Ok, that's my take. If you'd like to beat me up, go for it ! This Quarantine is driving me nuts anyway and I can't do any of the real work around my home until my knees get a little stronger.............Bruce
