I have believed that most stuff (with the possible exceptions of string theory and the time before the Big Bang), if truly understood, can be explained to an interested and intelligent, but otherwise ignorant, listener. I had a lot of practice in my many years as a rocket scientist. Early efforts were pretty dismal, I must confess. It took a fair amount of practice, and some coaching.
PS: as to the question of how fast does my beer warm up on a hot, humid day vs. a hot not so humid day, I have thought I could actually write a paper about that, with all the proper equations, charts, graphs, and eight-by-ten colour glossy photographs with circles and arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one explaining what each
