David You might check this out at summitracing.com . DEI-010401. I have used this product on the bottom side of the engine bay tin to keep out heat from the exhaust. I have no insulation inside the bay it self. Also JCWhitney has a 3 piece set for a bug that could be used inside the bay with some modifying??
I have been using a high gloss black sheet aluminum that is used by trailer builders. Easier and best time to this 2-3 hour job is when engine is out of car. Take sheets of paper, overlapand tape them as needed to form a template of the engine compartment areas. transfere this pattern to a template made out of poster board, trace onto the aluminum sheet ( light pressure of a pencil is ok)Cut to size with quality aviation snips. Remove the clear plastic protective film from the aluminum. Apply the cut panels to the engine compartment with a few evenly spaced beads of silicone, this lessons the number of rivets needed, aviods ratles and gives it a clean appearance. Space black 5/8" head rivets evenly ...looks great and is easily cleaned.
