Posting my recently discovered CMC kit for sale. This kit was delivered to the buyer and placed in a garage and never touched for approx 20 years. It was still in the factory crate when I got it out of the garage. I removed from the crate and put on a rolling cart, so the crate is gone. No work has ever started on this, so it is a blank canvas for someone on this site to build their dream car. Work and storage have caused my plans to change as well, so here it is. $6500 with all the parts that came with it.  Car located in Louisville KY. Buyer responsible for pickup and freight. Email ky911sc@gmail.com with questions. Thanks

CMC's all came with a substantial steel welded subframe bonded (epoxy and rivets) to the fiberglass body.  Below is one from a burned CMC.  This sub-chassis greatly increases the strength of the OEM shortened VW pan.  In 1988 the classic CMC kit sold for $7795 plus over $1k for shipping (that's for black gel coat so white maybe $2-300 less). So you would have to get a VW T1/Ghia pan - but you need suspension/engine/trans/wheels anyhow.

As Im sure you know...they (VS) bought out CMC.

That's not true at all!  Was it meant to be "tongue in cheek?" CMC initially bought out IM (Yes, true - see Note) when they were still in Calif (before moving to BC) that was around 1978.  CMC also bought up FiberFab - and then killed off their vast product line!  CMC was a huge company with growing legal suits - anyone that would think of buying CMC would have been foolish.  Around 1992-94 FL State Attorney General closed down CMC.  CMC became AutoResolutions around 1999 mandated to filled missing orders/parts ($2.5 million in restitution).  It then morphed to Street Beasts and went back to the old CMC business model until it too when belly up in 2008-10.  (Dates are fuzzy as lots of back and forth legal actions).

Last count was VS produced just over 3k cars - CMC was easily 10 times that production during their hay days. (They were mostly kits - not rollers or finished cars). CMC has a tainted past due to their business model and CEO George Levine - but once you got all the parts, the kit was well done.  Finally quality depends on the actual builder's expertise.

CMS molds and parts were sold off years ago.  A SOCer here in FL bought a complete wide-body set of molds (since sold to another SOcer in Sarasota FL).  MGMagic bought up trailer loads of parts and is still selling them for the Speedster, Gazelle and MGTD).

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intermeccanica

"During 1976–1979, Automobili Intermeccanica was formed in partnership between Reisner and Tony Baumgartner in Santa Ana, California, to build Speedsters. About 600 Speedsters were constructed. Baumgartner bought out Reisner's 50% share of Automobili Intermeccanica and later sold the Speedster project and equipment to Classic Motor Carriages in Florida."

Also From Intermeccanica - The Story of the Prancing Bull on page 145.  Notes the sale of IM molds (Reisner's partner Baumgartner sold CMC the Speedster side) to CMC.  CMC later sued IM over a non-compete clause but by then IM was onto the Roadster - not the Speedster so suit dissolved.

I will bump my ad this one time before I start on building this car. $6k will be the price, no more, no less.

happy holidays.

Could you weigh the frame, Dan? I'd love to know how much weight would be saved by replicating it in aluminum (al is less than 40% of the weight of steel).

Thanks. Al

The frame is bonded with the body, not a separate part.

Thanks Dan. I was under the impression that they were separate.

Early CMCs came with the frame separate and the doors not mounted.  My Nov. '88 came with both installed.  The sub-frame is very strongly attached to the fiberglass body with what looks like lots of Liquid Nails and 1/4" dia rivets.  I would not want to try to separate them.

Dave - If put in a framed wood crate - it can be shipped by truck.  Since it is not a roller (with steering/wheels) it would be costly.  In 1988 (a long time ago) CMC quoted $1400 from Miami to Northern VA via Pilot Trucking. You still need a donor VW for pan/suspension/drive train.

Thanks Greg- I thought that at 1 time the body and the sub-frame were separate. I didn't know they later came more complete.
