The Karmann Ghia received the IRS suspension in 1969. Up until then, it was swing axle. One other item is that the 1968 Ghias received axles that were one inch longer, to improve stability. Owners of 1968 Ghias (I have a Cabriolet that I have owned since 1972) cannot put any aftermarket wheels or wider tires on them without switching to earlier axles.

I think it was just the '68 Ghias that received the longer axles, and then in '69 they went to IRS. The '68 Ghias also received a high back seat with integral headrest for that year only (not important to this discussion except to illustrate that VW sometimes did things for one year only). I think those seats were then used in the VW's but not in the Ghias past that one year.
