Looks like a lot of fun. I'll be in Santa Barbara. 50/50 if I'll drive the 'new' VS Speedster to SB and then the 90 minute drive North on the 101 to SLO. I still need to fix my 75% WOT plate issue (minor). But I do want to add a remote oil filter, CHT gauge, front and rear shocks and do a few 'while I'm there' suspension mods before the event. I just haven't had the time lately to work on it. I got the VS to drive as my summer beach town morning-cup-of-coffee-go-getter as a replacement for my 1969 912 daily driver which I plan to restore. Who would have thunk to get a project to work on a project??!! Perhaps it's best I wait to do some of the mods until after SLO - I'll have better ideas after seeing and talking with all you guys.
montereybrian posted:Hi guys, just wanted to post that I will be attending the gathering and staying at the host hotel. After much deliberation I have decided to trailer my car down as it is new to me, has no top, windows, heater, gps, spare tire, etc. My question is can anyone tell me where I can park my 18' car/equipment trailer down there? I don't think there will be a big enough parking lot at the hotel for it and my jeep, but hopefully so. Thanks in advance for any info.
I remember from last year that there was quite a bit of parking available in the lot surrounding the hotel. If any early-bird arrivals could block off a few spaces for you, you should be "In Like Flynn!" And BTW: Most, if not all, of the Speedsters in attendance are without tops, windows, gps, spare tires, and the proverbial "etc." As for "heaters," the best anyone will be getting out of theirs is about what a Zippo lighter puts out. Our chosen "mobile money pits" are best outfitted with a warm coat, gloves, over-the-ears cap, and a good lap blanket.
I kind of hope it's cool enough for a coat but I'll bet it will be perfect top down weather.
Brian....I really like your Spyder ? Especially the Subaru engine ! Who made your car ? In the photo of your engine compartment, are those the seat belts hanging into there ? Do they mount in there and then come out, up and over into the cockpit for you to use? Do you have any straps as a final "safety catch" to insure that the clamshell doesn't fly off if the regular latch don't fully connect ? I've never seen a radiator mounted back there. Not a bad idea ! Especially for bleeding out air !.........Bruce
@aircooled it looks like the radiator is attached to the back of the rear hood
For the June 7, 8, & 9 Cruise; are there any shows happening in that time frame, or is this just a meet up with the LA SOC?
This is the annual meeting where the SoCal SOCers, the NorCal SOCers and a few ZonerSOCers have the honor of meeting up with the CenCal SOCers.

SOMETIMES and I mean only SOMETIMES the drive home on Saturday along the coast can get a tad chilly. Not for me mind you but for some.
I forgot to mention that Teby is no longer a CenCal SOCer, but we will still open the gate for him.

Whew! At first, I read your Post as saying a few "stonerSOCers" would be meeting up with CenCal, but then - figuring that was redundant - I went back and reread your comment.
Lol. Zoners are what Californians call Arizonians.

Why don't you check out the University Inn? It's only 1/2 mile up the street and 1/2 the price.

Everyone should make sure your Speedie's A/C is topped off and ready to blow out @ 50 degrees (that's Fahrenheit) ...and don't forget your coat.
Sorry I won't get to meet all of you on this cruise. I am going to have to cancel, since its the same weekend as my 914 club gathering. with my Spyder sold and my 914 finished, I have to show it off.
Thanks all. I cancelled my room at University Inn if anyone needs last minute booking.
I had great hopes of making it out there but Carey still has my Speedy Green Machine at Breman where it's been sequestered since November for the Subaru conversion. It looks like I will have to wait another year. My mother used to live in LO and I was looking forward to visit her old homestead.
Save me a spot next year.l

Hello, I'm currently in SLO county and would love to bring my Speedster. I'd like to head down the 41 or 46 highways and meet up with y'all headed south on Highway 1. Will this be SUNDAY JUNE 9th I assume? I'm hoping I can time it right, and then drive the rest of the way to SLO. What do you think? Is it possible to estimate the time after you leave Big Sur? Any other stops like in Cambria or Morro Bay planned? Thanks! Marcel

Gentlemen,
We are a go. T-shirts orders have been sent to the printer, food quantities have been sent to the caterers, route books have been printed, route packets have been assembled, and we are now one week away from the 2019 West Coast Cruise. I hope it all goes well and I don't F it up.
My plan is to be at the hotel on Thursday but if not very early on Friday. Look for me by the pool on Friday evening so you can come and get your route packet. I'd like to have a driver's meeting around 8:00pm by the pool so we can go over the route book and some strategies for making the drive go smoother.
We are driving about 40-50 more miles this year but at slightly past the midway point there is a place, two places actually, where you can get gas. If you're comfortable doing 140-150 miles on a tank of gas you won't need to fill up.
Don't forget to bring some cool gear, SWAG, memorabilia, or whatever for the raffle.
I emailed Bill Nash and Vince Manto the details.
We'll see you all in SLO.
@Robert M Im looking forward to it! I’ll be there Thursday evening for sure. Going to take in the Farmers Market Street Fair. I can lend a hand on Friday if needed.
Excellent, group leader!
Regarding the raffle...I have run out of car-related items. I have no more shirts or artwork left, I'm down to just two etched glass speedster mugs which I'm keeping.
This year I'm thinking drugs or alcohol...probably alcohol. The drugs will most likely be consumed on the ride down...

Marcel;
The group traveling from NorCal to SLO is doing that trip south from the Monterey area on Friday afternoon, June 7th.
You can get more detail by searching for their post "NorCal caravan to SLO".
Click on "Forums" at the top of this page, click on "Speedsters", click on "Events" then scroll down to "NorCal Caravan to SLO".
Hope you can join the shenanigans next weekend!
As a newbie (owner since 9/2018) and some SLO county residency under my belt, maybe next year I can be of more help in planning, like reserving a private setup at a local winery, with of course a great road to get there (See Old Creek Rd. between Morro Bay and Rt 46) as just one example.
A place like the Estrella Warbirds museum in Paso Robles has car clubs arriving all the time for visits and photo shoots. I'm a volunteer over there.
Old Creek Road...nearly lost it in the hairpin several times as @Ryan (formerly) in NorCal can attest to.
Kath and I did Santa Rosa Creek road yesterday, it really needs some work. Saw a county truck with 2 workers doing "Road Construction" according to their signs.
they were filling a couple potholes, two of 99,000...
Still, it was a most excellent drive, of course Moonstone Grill made it perfect...

Robert said the same thing. I’m still tempted to find time to sneak up the road a bit just to check it out. Apparently funds have already been allocated for its repair.
@SimplifyTALightness - you’re welcome to join the NorCal rally down to SLO. But why not make a day of it? Drive up the coast to meet us. No timing necessary since we’re hard to miss. Plus, you wouldn’t be the guy who joins a marathon at 25.2 miles.
Seriously though, please introduce yourself when we get to town. I’d love to learn about other local opportunities for next year.
Ryan, I’m meeting Cory Friday afternoon to work on a surprise for Saturday evening’s shenanigans. Thanks though, for the invite.
According to AccuWeather Saturday’s drive should include sterling Speedster weather!

Thanks for reminding me of the Warbirds expo. I've now added a short side-trip to my journey home from SLO beginning Sunday. I'll be going east from Paso Robles to take some pix at the James Dean "site" , anyway, and the museum will be aother nice stop.

Paul it was so nice today. Crowd was just right and love the cars.
I see the weather was spectacular in Sonoma (I live in Napa), and it's supposed to be even warmer tomorrow. Finally! Blue sky, sun, and no friggin' rain - just what our Speedies are built for, eh?!
Yes sir. Amazing weather. Enjoy your day tomorrow. Make sure phone fully charge. To much pictures and video. Ended up at Laganitas beer place at Petaluma
Was there all day, from 8am until 4:30pm. Great cars. A bit smaller than the historics at Laguna Seca in August, but equally as cool.
Impressive to see (2) Ferrari 250 GTO’s racing against a few Ferrari 250GT, a Ferrari 250 TdF, and a few Cobras and a few speedsters.
Was cool to see the speedsters hold their own against the much larger engine displacements of the Ferraris.
Also, a huge highlight was watching Lewis Hamilton’s F1 car (the W07) whip around the track to set the track record.

I will, for sure, be taking my camera. I don't carry a "smart" phone with me - I can't stand 'em. The one I've got is used exclusively to keep papers from flying off my desk. The old clam-shell Motorola works fine as my emergency phone. I keep in the Speedie (to call AAA) instead of the missing spare.
Did you bring your speedster @kevin

I will present this raffle prize in it's Amazon packaging. The lucky(?) recipient will have to take a chance on its value and viability. Who knows? It could be compostible garbage bags or puppy treats as these items relate to my current orders.
The lucky(?) recipient might want to donate it back to the raffle, unopened, and add to the money prize at the end? If it was me I would pass the box under the nose of a dog before I made that decision.

EXCELLENT! I got there early (7:30AM) and was able to spend some time with the 3 speedsters during their setup and prep. Then, I walked the complete paddock...drooling the entire time. I stayed for the first 3 races (#1: pre-WWII "BM's"(before mufflers); #2: I was so impressed with them, I forget ; #3: Ferarri's, 350 GT Mustangs, and the 3 Speedsters). At least the Porsches looked good while trying to keep up! All in all, it was a very good morning. I had to get home in time to do some errands and watch the Warriors. Gotta go...it's 4th Q and the Dubs are leading.
Hi Everyone, well I have tried to get my spider up and running for the cruise/event but realized today that I will not make it. My car is over-heating, brake calipers are leaking, and a few other minor issues. I cancelled my reservation at the host hotel today and will spend the weekend at home , pouting.
Why? Just drive anything. I'm driving a Toyota Tacoma!
x2 what Troy said. Our West Coast Cruise is not an exclusive cruise. Quite a few SOCers who no longer have their Speedsters still attend with their other favorite car. Cuz'n Vinny has driven his '57 T-bird and Cadillac XLT, GERD drives his (AHEM) Miata, Dave Mitchell drives his Fiat Spyder, Bill Nash brought his '72 El Camino, Troy has brought his Mercedes GLC, etc.
The event is not so much about the cars as it is the camaraderie we've all established over the years.
Don't miss the event simply because your Spyder is not ready. This IS NOT the PCA!!

This is my first time at the West Coast Cruise, and I’m already in love with this event!
I was able to get out here a day early, and spent about nine hours today blasting all over God’s beautiful Central-Coast-Creation with Will Hesch, who drives Whitecloud, and a friend of his who drives a real ‘58 Speedster.
Just wait until you’re driving your favorite car in the world down perhaps the most famous highway in the world – California Highway 1, the PCH! If you’ve never done it, you’re going to have to pinch yourself — it’s just that gorgeous! And the incredible journey through low valleys and across rippling creeks aiway from the beach is just as lovely…
Thanks, @WILL, for being such a terrific tour guide today!

@PaulEllis — can’t wait to see you out here, buddy!
See you all tomorrow evening!
Have fun out there. We did the highway all the way down from Mcminville Oregon, all the way down the mountain like 25 miles of corners then PCH to Santa Cruz and I really could not drive quickly on the PCH at all. I couldn't catch my breath as it was just so awesome and breathtaking the ocean draws you in like a siren call to look at it.
Even my son kept saying the same thing and he is not really vocal on the environment or scenery much at all usually.

Just thought I’d share a few shots I snapped of the NorCal caravan’s southern journey on the PCH1. We were fortunate enough to have a few slow cars in front of our group (including a motor home) that refused to move over to allow us to pass; allowing us to take in the sites, clean our cars, do some knitting; while we slowly chugged down to SLO.

I love the idea of an SOC or PCCA hat, but (no offence Brian) I wouldn't be caught dead in a hat like that. Maybe dark grey washed cotton? I'll bet it's an older guy thing...
Something like this with an SOC logo stitched in slightly darker? I just can't see myself doing the hiphop/rapper lid.

@SimplifyTALightness (got a first name?)- great shots!
And @Lane Anderson, don't care if it's photoshopped; it's not a hat that I would wear.
What are the specs of that hat? You know the drill. Is it 100 thread count per inch or a polymer blend. What percentage poly versus cotton? What is the weight difference between the mesh hat versus full cotton hat. If mesh, how many holes are in the plastic strap? If it's a buckle adjustment, what is the tension strength of the buckle? Can the hat brim be manually manipulated for a vintage curve? What would be the proper radius for a vintage curvature of the brim versus a more outlaw curve?
By the way, Longfella, what's your name. These avatar signatures are immoral.
Disclaimer: Just joking and having a little fun on here!
It’s a super special organic non-gmo cotton blend that is SPF 1000. Based on the flat brim shape, it helps with aerodynamics when the top is down. Curved hats don’t do this and cause unnecessary vibration of the head...

I always put the top up on the drive home since I usually get burnt on Saturday. Even with the top up, I was cooking inside (more than the last two years).
More concerning is when the wifey and daughter drive the coupe up. If it is that hot on the way back, that's not good IMO. So, plans change and the price of the Coupe goes up ;-)
Thankfully, the Speedster held nicely. The temp gauge got the highest I have seen it, but not high enough to pull over and let her sit for a bit. I will thank Greg for making my engine combo and oil cooler set-up

Teby told me what happened on the way. There is a chance your motor was experiencing some vapor lock with the fuel system.
Mine is definitely the ignition that cuts off as the rev counter just went to zero from time to time only to jump back to the register the RPM. I just bought the replacement coil from CB, as that is the cheaper part compared to the digital Magnaspark distributor part. Hope it will cure the problem.
We finally got home at 5am. We purchased new trailer tires Friday as soon as we arrived at SLO just for peace of mind. They turn out to be too wide and rubbed. Fifty miles outside of town we had two flats and only one spare. Not that two spares would have helped. A tow truck took us 30 miles to one of the few tire shops open Sunday and we got a new set of tires. It was a $500 tow fee but there was nothing else we could do. It turned out to be a 22 hour journey home, normally 9 or 10 hours. Hopefully Discount Tire will take care of their mistakes and reimburse us the costs.
In spite of all that, it was a great trip and we hope to go again next year. We met a lot of great people had a great time.

Sorry to hear of your travel troubles. Glad to hear you got it handled though. Your automotive insurance may take car of the tow bill since your trailer is usually covered when attached to the car. It was a pleasure to finally meet you. I wished I could have spent some more time talking with you but as event coordinator I had a few duties to tend to. Your car was just as colorful in person as it in on the computer screen.
Somehow it's nice to know even those with oil coolers had to pull over and let it cool down. That was on my "ASAP" shopping list after our trip home. We didn't heed the advice of some of the wiser in the group to leave early. Instead I dropped off my photographer at Morro Rock to birdwatch while I raced around Santa Rosa Creek Road. By the time we got on the road home, it was hot.
We limped to King City, visiting the Missions along the way to cool off, bird watch, and visit the Missions. But after Bitterwater on Route 25, it started to cool off and made it home without much hassle.
After the comments above, I cleared my shopping cart. The oil cooler upgrade will wait a bit longer.
I can’t stop watching those videos!
Make sure you’re watching the Challenge Route one! You earned it!
Thank you, kindly!
I also earned a new muffler!

Trust me, there are some good twisties with beautiful scenery and ....you guessed it...a "few" decent winery stops! You can count on great weather in both September and October.
Boys, it was an absolute pleasure spending time with you last weekend! Just the best!
i don’t know if I ever would’ve treated myself to a 9.5-hour trailer trip, had you all not been at the end of that Uhaul rainbow...😆
@Robert M — thanks so much for your hard work in organizing the prom! It was a yuge success!
California’s a very big state, but this terrific weekend allowed us to take a pretty big bite out of it — high meadows, deep glens, and a matchless seaside... Thanks to all of my new friends for sweetening the trip with so many laughs, and so many Speedsters!
And for all of those who live too far away to trailer yourself out to this amazing event, consider this:
Perhaps you treat yourself to a golf getaway or a ski vacation or a week in a house at the beach each year, but whatever you spend on a typical vacation might cover the shipment of your car out to the West Coast Cruise and back, plus your airfare and hotel. I believe there would be more than one California club member who would be willing to take delivery of your car so that it would be waiting for you when you got out there...
Come out a few days early, as I did, and you can log hundreds of beautiful, unforgettable California miles on your car before you even meet up with this terrific group on Friday! IT’S THAT MUCH FUN! And, believe me, there’s nothing like seeing the car you love framed up against the limitless Pacific, on one of the world’s most famous highways…
Consider it! 🏎💨

The drive back was the Road To Hell! The ONLY enjoyable part of it was the Warbirds Museum: very nice collection of militaria PLUS a fabulous auto collection that includes a 1954 Corvette in 100% original unrestored condition. Even the brilliant red paint looks like it was sprayed yesterday! From there, the ride went seriously DOWNHILL into Hell. First, if anyone is ever interested in seeing what has been done at the James Dean Junction....DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME or gas. There's absolutely NOTHING there except a small state sign! I continued northeast up to Coalinga (originally Coaling Station A) at Noon, and then back northwest through some nice pretty tight twisties in 106 friggin degrees! The temp never went below that number for the rest of my Sunday excursion: 5 hours (including a 45" rest-stop at Pinnicles Nat'l Park) ending up in Gilroy (Garlic Capital) where it was too hot to even go to the pool. I got back on the road Monday morning @ 7am - just in time to hit the morning commute up into San Jose. By the time I got Speedie back into her storage locker and I got home....the temperature was well on its way to 110 F at 4pm. All in all, a GREAT trip Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Sunday and Monday sucked!
As for "the Napa trip," I'm not getting into it until I know there's some real interest and from how many other "wackadooz." Also, I'm setting my surgery date today (new shoulder) and that'll probably be in October. What about the Annual Tour d'Ho Festival?

Yeah, I wouldn’t sport this look unless it was absolutely necessary!
I was staying in Morro Bay, right on the coast, and I awoke on Friday morning to a chilly 53° and dense fog (1/4 mile visibility), but I was on a tight schedule. I had to leave by 6:30 to meet Ryan McCarthy up at Bixby Creek Bridge so that we could punish our cars and lungs on the Coast Road that runs behind the bridge and through some beautiful country before meeting up with the PCH farther south.
WORTH IT!
