So 3 jobs remain to get it running and I have a deadline of November 23rd.

  • Cooling
  • Fuel
  • Steering

I had a bit of a kick to the nuts a while back which deflated me. When the speedster was booked to be wiring checked for insurance, they failed it and failed it bad because of non-compliant colour coding and location of fuses and relays. All the work that myself and my friend and his dad did, were for nothing.

So I’ve managed to find a local lad who is going to re-wire the whole car from top to bottom and also do my ECU harness for the EFI and remove tabs/ pins and wiring that is not needed to clean up everything. The catch is that the car has to be running and moving under its own power before he’ll touch it.

I booked him back in June and the only spot that he had was due to a cancellation in November. Otherwise it would have been in the new year. It’s a 3 day job and he runs a mobile unit. Cost is about R8000 or about $650, which is pretty cheap for what he’s doing. Best part is he’s certified and accepted by the insurance company.  So I worked started on Saterday on tying up the last 3 projects. Cooling was first.

The old cage that I made was too lightweight and if it took a knock, would more than likely leave me stranded, so I beefed it up. Also planned the layout way better and offset the radiator to one side to allow space for a future oil cooler and also space for the radiator piping and mounting points for the ducting flaps which can easily be removed. I’m also welding on tabs for mounting.

Enter the fence. I kept the old fence from the front of our house when we broke it down as the steel was good and 3mm flat bar stock and 2mm angle stock

The new unit is slimmer, sits lower and also has a bigger core for better cooling, on-board mount for the thermostat. The bonus is the cowling, fan unit are all stock VW golf and are cheap to replace and good quality, so nothing that I have to fab. I should finish this on Friday and have it mounted with new tabs and painted up.

The wiring that was pulled apart after I loomed the lot. Bugger.

Flatfourfan...........What was the issue with wire colors ? Where did you have the fuse box when they objected to it's location ?...............Bruce

Don't forget Bruce, he's in South Africa and they have much different/stricter regulations than we have here for assembled vehicles.

I was about to go into panic mode. I'm getting close enough to where I'm going to get insurance. Whew! Breath easy now...

Cheers guys.

#1. The codes over here for vehicles is a joke, it's very loosely  regulated at best.

#2. My issues all stem from the insurance of the car. My broker said that my car will be valued the same as a backyard built beach buggy (approx. $1500) when completed if insured under the current cover. In order to have the car valued correctly (approx. $18 000) I need an engineers report, (which I already have), valuation from a recognized builder, (which will be done when completed) and a safety certificate which includes stuff like fuel lines, safety equipment and wiring. The wiring is where people just give up.

My wiring although the correct gauge is the incorrect colours, the terminals are not heatshrunk, the relays are mounted in an area not recognized and I have exposed wiring in places. The fuse box is mounted on the kick panel and must be mounted on a metal surface. The fuse box we can work around as we can mount a steel plate behind that. I believe it's all about mounting surfaces to something that can't burn quickly, but the relays have to move.
