So 3 jobs remain to get it running and I have a deadline of November 23rd.
- Cooling
- Fuel
- Steering
I had a bit of a kick to the nuts a while back which deflated me. When the speedster was booked to be wiring checked for insurance, they failed it and failed it bad because of non-compliant colour coding and location of fuses and relays. All the work that myself and my friend and his dad did, were for nothing.
So I’ve managed to find a local lad who is going to re-wire the whole car from top to bottom and also do my ECU harness for the EFI and remove tabs/ pins and wiring that is not needed to clean up everything. The catch is that the car has to be running and moving under its own power before he’ll touch it.
I booked him back in June and the only spot that he had was due to a cancellation in November. Otherwise it would have been in the new year. It’s a 3 day job and he runs a mobile unit. Cost is about R8000 or about $650, which is pretty cheap for what he’s doing. Best part is he’s certified and accepted by the insurance company. So I worked started on Saterday on tying up the last 3 projects. Cooling was first.
The old cage that I made was too lightweight and if it took a knock, would more than likely leave me stranded, so I beefed it up. Also planned the layout way better and offset the radiator to one side to allow space for a future oil cooler and also space for the radiator piping and mounting points for the ducting flaps which can easily be removed. I’m also welding on tabs for mounting.
Enter the fence. I kept the old fence from the front of our house when we broke it down as the steel was good and 3mm flat bar stock and 2mm angle stock
The new unit is slimmer, sits lower and also has a bigger core for better cooling, on-board mount for the thermostat. The bonus is the cowling, fan unit are all stock VW golf and are cheap to replace and good quality, so nothing that I have to fab. I should finish this on Friday and have it mounted with new tabs and painted up.
The wiring that was pulled apart after I loomed the lot. Bugger.
