I think it looks good without towel bars. They just clutter up the lines of the car. Given the choice, I would go without the uprights as well. Now what to do about that side trim...

How does one DRY their TOWELS without TOWEL BARS? This is an efficient way as the wind dries the towels while the wet towels helps cool the car......Dr. Porsche and his "GLOBAL WARMING"  division, back in 1938, describes it in the owners manual

OK so a two year old Intermeccanica "S" with a $90K original build cost.

Why has it not even remotely held it's value? Beautiful car, high end builder, A/C, power windows and locks, 2.5l Subie engine, only 1500 miles on her.

I'm still of the opinion that original costs are a tad too high for cars that aren't perfect....but this is more of a deal if there's wiggle room.

SIMPLY the NEW CAR "cliche": when a new car loses 25 plus% of its VALUE the day its driven off of the lot...AND VERY IMPORTANTLY, the CURRENCY/INFLATION INDEX of the US/CANADIAN dollar. This has enabled ALL IM cars built before 2008/10 to be valued at almost their purchase price(30% less than today's prices). The last few years has seen the CANADIAN dollar  weaken relative to US DOLLAR, except almost ALL of IMs costs are DOLLAR driven as per their BUSINESS MODEL/INTERNATIONAL REACH/PROXIMITY to USA . IM is "FISCALLY" caught in CANADA, BUT, very close to the border of US/CANADA!

ESSENTIALLY a difficult mix of MICROECONOMICS and MACROECONOMICS

WRT Initial cost and held value...

When a customer is jonesing (the heart wants what the heart wants) to have a car built to his/her specifications, the builder says '...if that's what you want, this is what it's gonna cost you'. A sellers' market.

Should the car eventually go up for sale, the owner of that car is looking for someone who is willing to pay (whatever) for the original owners' build preferences, which may or may not be high on the potential buyers' priorities. If not, the buyer goes on the next car for sale on his/her list. A buyers' market.

How many cars For Sale advertisements have we seen that include 'Thousand$ Inve$ted' with a sale price significantly lower?

I'm just saying...

Jim's got it in a nutshell. The heart wants what the heart wants. If nothing else will do, it'll cost you.

People who think that building a car or a house is going to end up costing something roughly similar to just buying one that is already built have never built a car or a house. Both will cost about 1.5x what something similar but not exactly to your specifications would cost.

Builders (of houses and cars) have an economy of scale. This homebuilder likes to put up these 5 plans-- deviate from the norm and everything takes longer and costs more. All of the subs are bidding like it's a "one off" because it is-- they can't put their cheapest guys on it because it requires thought and skills acquired over many years.

Car builders are like that too. Every IM and Beck any more is a special bespoke build, and the pricing reflects that. If you call Kirk from Vintage, he'll try to talk you out of almost every fancy option-- I think because he can tell every guy on the shop floor, "just do this one like all the rest", and it's good. I've always said, JPS is at his level best when he's doing something he's familiar with. He'll tell you all day long (again and again) how he's a custom car builder, but my experience is "not really".

Everybody in the game has something they are good at, or they wouldn't have lasted. The price reflects their business model. My IM coach had half-a-dozen "one off" things on it that were not done before. There's not one of them that a potential buyer would give a dime extra for, but it was worth whatever it cost me to have them done.

Your mileage may vary. Be very careful before you order a new car. Forewarned is forearmed.
