I have a Speedster made by Vintage Speedsters in 2016 and would like to mount a Setrab 1-Series Oil Cooler 19 Row w/12 Volt Fan in the left rear wheel well; however, there is a problem.

         My oil cooler

The oil filter was already mounted to the very back of the wheel well and there is not enough room for both it and the oil cooler to fit in the wheel well along with the required plumbing. . . without having the tire rub against the cooler while making a turn or hitting a bump in the road.

Clearly, the filter must be moved some where else in order to properly fit the oil cooler in the wheel well.   Does anyone have a suggestion as to where it can be relocated?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Cliff, had exactly the same issue when we put a Setrab in the wheel well of my VS.

Moved the filter further aft by a few inches and there was then room for the cooler.

Tony ended up using a Setrab filter holder, because it gave more options for how we could route the oil lines. And mounting the filter horizontally (a little messier at oil change time) also freed up some more space (the filter could be mounted lower).

I think the holder we used was this .

Note that this filter holder is not a 'sandwich' holder (that lets you bypass the cooler for quicker oil warmup). Setrab does have those, too, though.

I tried to get a photo of my set up. Nearly impossible without pulling the tires. Its the same as what Mitch describes. My filter is pushed waay back and sits at a 45 degree angle way in the back of the fender. I use a setrab sammich thermostat adaptor to plumb the cooler in. Oil lines from the motor go to the oil filter bracket. The sammich screws onto the filter adaptor. The two lines from the cooler screw into the sammich. The oil filter screws onto the sammich. Easy peasy.

@coolryde built me a oil cooler bracket that mounts the cooler 90 degrees off the rear frame rail. Plenty of room back there.

See... Impossible to get a good photo. Ignore that rubber anti vibe grommet. I need to get a better set. I lost one and cut that out of scrap rubber.

Kevin - if you read this... Killer bracket. Fit without any issues. For future brackets, it would be cool if you could make the mounting tabs longer so we can use both mounting holes in the setrab cooler. Notice how I only used one hole above?

Im not super worried about it. I can get one bolt per corner. It is solid.

Hope this helps...

Gentlemen,

Wow, those suggestions sound great and very much appreciated!!!

I should have mentioned in my first post that we did try to install both the Setrab oil cooler and filter side by side against the wall in the left rear wheel a number of times (along with the plumbing); however, even after our final attempt the fit was still so tight we ran shy by about one (1) inch for the rear tire to clear the lower edge of the cooler when turning a corner in the road or hitting a bump.

Well, because of your help I've rented a car lift for tomorrow and feel sure we can come up with an alternative solution to solve the problem.

My thanks to each of you for your kindness and support,

I haven't used a Derale cooler, but their oil thermostat is VERY nice quality, and not expensive. Same for the thermoswitch for the fan. I'm very pleased, and I think I also ordered from Summit. FAST shipping, if you order early enough in the morning, I've gotten stuff the next day for the economy or free shipping!

Just put the Setrab in a different place. Mine is horizontal to the fram and just in front of the axle. I did have to have mounting straps fabricated since I didn't use the stock ones.

The location of my cooler has been perfect. Safe from stones, good airflow, up out of the way so it won't hit anything, and the filter stays in the wheel well. I couldn't be happier with it.

My earlier post should have read, "it's horizontal to the frame" not "fram". If you're interested and need more/better photos let me know.
