Calling Gary P, you are the final arbiter on this issue as you own the car:

How many forward gears have you discovered on the car?

How many reverse gears have you found on the car?

Please tell us that there is only one neutral position on the car?

Thanks!

The new owner of Collins car called me a couple of weeks ago after having driven it from Southern California up to it's new home in Sacramento.  He didn't have any over heating issues on the drive and Temps were near 100 as he drove over the grapevine.  He confirmed that the car does indeed have 6 forward gears, just as Collin said.  However  he did say that 1st was so low that it was almost unusable.

DANG, Troy, you messed up all the dissing directed at Colin and a good rant about "how many speeds that trans actually had" by our SOC transmission experts.

Add 'Actual Transmission Speeds' on the hit list of the 'Speedster For Sale' lynch mob. Bwaaaa Haaaaa

I smelled the expired cheese on this one LOL especially since it was done by John Steele........

6 speed? Ha, we all have 6 speeds.

Yeah, I figured we were being messed with; if there was a way to fit a 6 speed we'd have heard about it (revamp the rear suspension to remove the torsion tube and that does open up the possibilities! But until then...). It's fun to dream though!

I was with Gary at Tour d'Hoe. He confirmed that he only has 4 forward gears.

Are you sure we're talking about the same car? I'm not making it up. He called me to ask if he got a good deal and who the builder was!  I should still have his number in my call list.  I'll try to find it and call him.

Yeah, Troy. Same guy, same car. No 6-speef

I found his number and left him a VM.  I had a 44 minute conversation with him on the 28th and we spoke about the 6 speed controversy on the SOC.  He said it definitely had a 6 speed transmission, but 1st gear was so low it was basically unusable.

Very strange that he would tell me that and that Collin would have posted that and then tell you it was only a 4 speed.

Did you happen to drive it?

@Bob: IM S6 is that manual shift?  And does that come with the wing back there ?

Ray:  Six speed manual, but no wing.  What do I need with a bleeping huge wing on the back of my car?    It's not as if I would ever need it...well, maybe...

Seriously, I chose the STI model that only had a small trunk lid lip on the back, for the sleeper look.  I have to remain dignified in my dotage.

We needed a second family car to go along with our ten year old Volvo wagon, and a Subaru is a good, all around driving car.  First new daily driver we have gotten in forty-four years, so I went for an STI.

Yeah, Colin did post that it was a six-speed  transmission but he was  including reverse...and neutral.

Such a let down- I had another gear chart drawn up and everything!

You can get a 6 speed Subaru transaxle with the reverse ring and pinon.  BTW, this thread has folks at work asking me, "What's so funny?"

Sorry, Todd, but I think you're wrong.  If you read the Subarugears site info, the 6 speed conversion is not available for 6 MT models beginning with TY 85-.  Unfortunately, those are the US models.

Their conversion is only available for 6 speed models TY751/756, which seem to be foreign models, such as those sold in Australia.

So I can't buy one of the 6 speeds that they do modify?  Or it can't be imported?  Or?

Darn!

If your car has a rear torsion tube maybe the first thing to ask is if it will even fit?

I think you can get it shipped from Australia call Todd at Subarugears and it would come all done up ready for you. There may or may not be custom

Subiworks, a distributor of SubaruGears in the USA, is located about an hour from my house, so if I was serious about obtaining one, I could probably head over there and ask.

http://subistuff.com/subarugea...p=1&subsection=7

I know Subiworks they did some for work for me.  So, if you live that close, then a call to Todd and you get the info right from the horses mouth so to speak and if he tells you it can be done than you can have him instruct those guys on what to do.  There is a guy in alberta who did one in a vanagon.  I would think it went to Subiworks.   Just saying.
