Ok, lets make this a bigger package.  Ive had lots of inquiries on the car, but nothing has closed yet.  Im going to add to the package.  I have a 2008 DUCATI 1100s Multistrada on the market. Air cooled, ohlins suspension, brembo brakes, 1100S Desmo race engine etc.  Air cooled with Air cooled sounds fun eh?  I will sell the car AND the motorcycle combined, with front and rear stands, extra windshield, back shelf rack and bag, a SHOEI racing helmet with a wireless multi channel communication mic, new battery, also  2 car covers for the speedster for a combined price of $33,000.00 This buys BOTH vehicles and all the extras.  Photo of the actual Motorcycle attached.

All you newbies looking for a car- this is a special car, guys, like several people have said! I have an older Intermeccanica that I have spent hundreds of hours lightening parts to get the horsepower to weight ratio as high as possible and if it was practical (or even possible) to replace the steel subframe (which is already bonded into the car) with aluminum to drop that kind of weight (believe me, I've thought about it- 150 lbs is almost 10%!) the rest of the guys on here would have seen the pics a while ago. Convert the 4 speed to a Berg 5 and that thing would be an absolute TERROR! I'm so surprised this car is still for sale. Al

And it has Nickies- I'm droolin' on the keyboard...

Stan, Edsnova, thank you for your kind input.  I grew up a kart and motorcycle drag racer, and I can say Ive never pushed this car HARD...yeah 4k, 4,500 RPM, but I havent taken it to 6,000 because I dont want to!  Listen to the videos above, its a blast to drive, but sadly I need to part ways and have to let it go.

Hello can you text me at 805 490 0548 to discuss your car and how to make the transaction

Hello,

I’m interested in the 356, is it still available ?

how difficult would it be to licence it in Canada?

thanks

Impossible because it is a replica built less than 15 years ago.

David, the car is registered as a 1966 volkswagen if that helps with a transfer?

paul

If it is registered in the U.S. as a 1966 VW, it would be registered the same in Canada, and therefore easy to import.  I did exactly that with my first Speedster that I imported to the great white north.

That's not what I was told by the local MOT office in Ottawa. Seems we get different opinions from different offices at the same or at different times. Policies do change over time too. I'd check with the local authorities and get something in writing before attempting the import into Canada. I hope Bob is right and it works out for you.

David:  Once imported as a 1966 VW, all you take to the MOT to get it registered and licensed is paper work.  When I came through customs with my first IM, they wanted the paper work, so they could cover their you know what.  No one has to actually see the car.

Unless the rules of the game have changed (and that needs to be checked for sure), a 1966 VW registration in the U.S. becomes the same in Canada.

This is an interesting discussion.  Seems to be contrary to everything else I have read about registering a replica with a USA VW title in Canada.

I hope it's correct, but I would like to see some confirmation from others.

I was also told ( way back in 2010 ) by the Canada Border people that if a replica on a VW chassis comes into Canada titled as a VW and using the original VIN on that VW chassis it would be refused entry into Canada. You don't even get through the border...period. It is simply recognized by the Border people as something other than a VW and does not qualify for entry.

This is just what I was told back then and things may have changed.

The authorities sometimes do strange things and sometimes it's better to not ask why. Recently I bought an Intermeccanica out in British Columbia from Ron Leonard. I get the car home with lots of paperwork from Ron, get a safety check done on the car and insurance coverage and go to the local Service Ontario office ( DMV in the States ). The car was listed for $29,900 and I bought it for and had a receipt for the exact sale price which was a few thou less. The Bytch at the Service Ontario says I need to get an appraisal for the car. Around the corner I go and pay $60 and get an appraisal for $21,200 and go back to see her. I still pay the tax on the stated sale price though. So, In a nutshell, I pay $60 to cover her ass. Now...the car gets transferred into my name and I get home to sort through the paperwork and file it away.

Here's the kicker, they have the sales receipt for the taxes ( 13% ) with me as the new owner and the seller as Richard Jobin, not Ron Leonard. Richard Jobin lives in Ontario and sold the car to Ron. Did I go back and ask them why that happened ?...no, no, no. Did she do me some favour in bypassing an out of Province seller in this case ? Who knows.

And this lead to another potential can of worms come to think of it. Before we Canucks import a car from the States we must export it from the States. In New York that means providing  the correct paperwork ( title, clearance from any financial encumbrances etc., sales receipt from the seller etc. ) 72 hours prior to border crossing from USA to Canada. Apparently this is to allow the US side to research the documents to prove that the vehicle was not stolen, used in a felony is not subject to any liens etc. which sounds reasonable. Now...some States allow a replica to be titled as a VW but I'm not sure if New York does. If they don't, would that be reason that they might not let me export a replica that is titled from some other State that does allow a replica to be titled as a VW ? Dunno.

My head hurts ....

My guess is

1/ If you call the border (Canada) and ask if you can import a replica titled as a VW, they'll say no.

2/ If you show up at the border with title as a XXXX VW and they don't look at the car, you'll get through. If they DO look at the car, you still might get through becuase jethro doesn't know what ever 19XX VW looks like.

3/ If you take that 19XX paperwork to register in ON, you might well get it registered, in fact I think you will.

4/ If you take the car and paperwork to get it registered and they examine the car, see #2

5/ If you try to register a 19XX VW and tell them it's a replica in Canada, you're in trouble.

I have seen Speedsters by Vintage for sale locally here so someone sure got it registered and licensed when the theory is it can only be IM.

You can successfully import a Vintage replica ( any replica in fact  ) into Canada if you have documentation to show that it was built more than 15 years ago. Registration in any province then would be straight forward as you're not trying to pass it off as a VW.

David,

I am adding some clarification to your statement above that some states in the US allow replicas to be registered as VWs.  There are likely more Speedster replicas registered as VW in California than any other state, since Vintage Speedsters used that as their common means of registration.  However, such registration is prohibited by California Vehicle Code.  A prudent buyer would need to research the registration laws if the car was registered in any other state to determine legality of VW registration.  Lots of owners still register their replicas in that manner, but it adds another level of caution to a buyer who wants to export the car.
