I took possession today!!!

The carrier used a very long trailer and was unsure about negotiating streets in my neighborhood, so I met him about five miles from my house.    My quick drive home was a blast as were the three other short drives I made today, concluding with my first night drive returning from a friend’s house.  I think I’m hooked.

Some info for the curious:

  • 2332cc (Yes @ALB I will share the engine build info, it’s been a long day so not just yet.  )
  • Front stock anti-sway bar
  • IRS
  • Vintage speed shifter
  • GT Silver metallic paint, dark grey German square weave carpet (but isn’t as dark as I thought it would be, but I like it), baseball glove vinyl upholstery.
  • Polished 5.5 vintage wheels
  • Lowered seat pans, and some other misc goodies

I must express my sincere thanks to all of the many members of this forum.  Your honest and sometimes unvarnished opinions helped me better understand what this hobby - this obsession - is and is not.  Three amazing SOC members allowed me to drive their speedsters which proved immensely helpful with my decision making: @ford356outlaw (Rafi), @*LongFella (Brian) and @BETTYLU356Speedster (also Brian).

You guys are awesome, thanks for letting me share the tent with you all.

(Yes, that is a Wham! poster on my wife’s side of the garage.  I still love her.)

Jon

Congratulations on the new car Jon. It looks really nice.

But the Wham poster may be a bit of a tell-tale sign of what has happened. With the new car you will experience many Wham songs: It's Worth Waiting For, Where Did Your Heart Go, The Edge Of Heaven, Heartbeat, A Ray Of Sunshine, Superslick, Credit Card Baby, Love Machine, Freedom, and of course before every drive your wife will say "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go.".

Thanks for the kind words everyone.  This truly is a wonderful community.

A few quick replies…

@DW if you like brown, baseball brown is quite nice.  Like anything to do with colors, screen views can be misleading, but here are a few:

Yes the driver dropped off a new X6 before delivering my speedy.   By coincidence his first drop was two blocks from my workplace. I was at work so I met him at his first drop so we could chat about an acceptable location for my drop.  Two passers by stopped and were admiring my car, while still in the enclosed trailer.

I followed him for the 20 minute drive to my drop off, realizing I would be driving my speedster home wearing steel toe shoes.  Not what I planned!

Although my house is small at 1640 sq-ft, I enjoy a 3 car garage.  Here is a different view to show more of my stuff.

@jncspyder I will try to make it to the Oaks Mall Sat, but weather might be an issue.   I’m out of town the following weekend so I won’t make it to Westlake.

@Robert M I’m not sure what is more entertaining, your post or the fact you knew all of those songs from memory!

I believe he states this engine makes 145HP.  It feels right.  It sounds wonderful.

Welcome to our growing Knucklehead Clan of Plastic Clown Car Owners!

Will we be seeing you three (that's you, the Speedy, and your wife) at the upcoming West Coast Cruise?   After all, SLO is only 150 miles north, and we'd sure like to see her in person. ...er, that is, both of 'em.

I’m a Cal Poly alum, and would love to make the trip.  So I’m thinking about it, however my Wham!/George Michael lover and I are traveling to London for a few weeks later in June, and we will have some things we need to take care of at our house, and for my elderly in-laws prior to our trip. So uncertain at this point.

At the very least I may join one leg of the caravan from points south (Camarillo to..?).

Jon

Usually the price differences are for different year/different size crests.

The 356 crest is, IIRC, the smallest.  911 and 944 were quite a bit bigger.  There is also a crest on the center cap of some Fuchs wheels and those can be different sizes, too.

I do not have a hood handle so my crest is mounted right onto the hood and glued in place so it can’t spin around on the single mounting stud.  I’m not sure, but I don’t think there is a rubber gasket between the crest and hood handle on a 356.  There are two gaskets between the 356 handle and hood.

There IS a rubber gasket under the crest on a 911/912/944 but none of those cars had hood handles.

I'm waiting on a Spyder, and was told to use 356a emblems. I was going to use emblem adhesive backing. I dont want to drill holes in a new car.
