What's a VW brake caliper made by Lucas?

My newly aquired 2001 IM has 4 wheel discs using calipers marked both VW and Lucas. Were these a Canadian version not used on cars imported to the USA, or what?

I associate the name Lucas with fun electrical glitches in the Triumph cars of my youth. I wasn't exactly delighted to find the name on my brakes.

"Hmmm... How could they make brakes short circuit and burn out?"

I don't know, Lane, but if anyone can do it the British can! :D

Yeah, Wolfgang, the backs are marked Lucas. They also have a small circled 'VW' as part of the casting.

This car wasn't driven much - 4700 miles in ten years and the brakes are less effective than I'd like. They feel like they're all working but it takes pretty high pressure to get an old style slow stop. I'd like the fronts to be more grabby or imediate and was thinking to buy some soft pads.

I'll have to take the pads out and see if they've got numbers to cross and shoot an email to Henry, who must be getting pretty tired of me by now.

I thought maybe someone would recognize the Lucas usage and say something like "Oh, you've got type 3 or 4 disc brakes."

When it comes to buying parts for these cars things get pretty weird sometimes. Gives me a headache.
That's a fascinating inroad by Chinese manufacturers -MG. Who'd have expected that one?
Holy Cow! SAIC is HUGE, with fingers in automotive pies all over the world, but not here. Also a link in Wikipedia showing the locations and activities of VW around the globe is enlightening, if not frightening to US economic hopes..http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Volkswagen_Group_factories

No, I haven't changed anything from the IM build, yet, but have a bunch of concerns including the brakes.

At first I thought it was just a glazed pad thing but a number of hard stops didn't change anything except reduce or eliminate a roaring sort of noise while the car was rolling.

I've got some other little projects to complete as time permits before I can delve into the brakes very far, but thought it'd be great if I could have new pads on hand when I do.
Year or so I was in London and spotted a new car with MG logo on it (MG6) - turn out it was a Chinese made car. Was not bad looking though but not a sports car. Made by SAIC (no not the US defense contractor) but Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation. SO Birmingham is back on MG map!

Apparently Lucas (Lucas-Girling) makes the front brakes on the VW Passat so maybe the rear too.

Have you gone to stainless steel covered rubber brake lines to each corner vs the rubber lines? They give a firmer pedal.
