I dropped the 1600cc engine out of my speedster and took it to the machine shop on Friday to have the block and heads bored out to accept 94mm cylinders. After picking alot of people's brains I decided to go with 1914cc engine with a very mild cam. I don't need more top end -just want more low end grunt. I found the 1600cc more than adequate at 70-75 mph.

My question is about the tranny which I assume is stock. A 2006 Vintage build. Inside the bell housing it is written in paint 412. The machinist said he could swap gears and rebuild for about $400-$600 which sounds reasonable. The present 1st and 2nd gears are really low. I am seeking advice from the guys who have switched trannys.

Thanks in advance

Here's the question....and you might want to delete the other thread. With a low revving (5000 or so rpm peak?) 1914, I would either stay with the 4.12 ring & pinion and stock gears - 3.78 1st, 2.31 2nd, 1.31? 3rd and .89 4th. You could install an aftermarket 1-2 mainshaft and gears, but they run about $500 or so just for the parts. The other way to go would be to change the r&p to a 3.88 (would solve the low 1-2 gear issue), but your 1914 won't develop enough torque to cruise comfortably with the .89 4th without overheating, so a 4th gear change to a .93 would work, getting you back to a final drive of about the same as before. The .93 is the 4th gear VW used with the 3.88 in production transaxles.

I would go with the 3.88 R&P gear& depending on how much & what kind of driving you do will determan what 4th gearm to use. I didnt like the 388 with the .82(Ithink) with my small motor (1874) but the 3.88 with the .93 was just about right, but with  my big motor I would rather have the .82  if I couldent go 5 speed. then that would be 5th gear.
