Anyone know someone selling an SAS Speedster? I like the way the car is described. More power from the "subie" engine being chief among my desires. However, after doing a bit of research im not sure i want to deal with Steve or want to wait the wait it would take.

So anyone selling one?

If not, anyone know a speedster that can satisfy my thirst for bhp and possibly forced induction?

Eric, welcome my friend and you need to check out the other tab... Classifieds.. ALL stuff being sold is there.. .you'll find some sweet tubs and a ton of help when it comes to buying one of these dream machines... even if you do not find a tub quick, come along with us on some runs.. you'll soon find out what you are interested in too! these guys are a wealth of information. Some of these clowns have expert knowledge too.
Eric, the queue at SAS is lengthy hence the wait is long. Many share your justified perspective of not wanting to wait. The mid-engine placement is nice and provides great weight distribution but there are alternatives.

About three of these cars have changed hands since the beginning and SAS is usually the only place that know when someone wants to sell. Doing business with SAS is not a bad experience but the wait is frustrating. And ..... there are other cars on the planet to drive while you wait.
I think i read some advice from someone on the site that said if it is your first Speedster buy a cheap one and see if i like it.

And really im not a polish everyday guy. I just want to drive a cool machine, and in this market i can get what i need for much less heart burn.

But i thank the guys who got the heart burn cuz eventually it helps guys like me.
Just curious.Totally new to the 356 forum. Almost bought a 1960 coupe that had been restored..and was in good shape. But I really was concerned about long term drivability - and opted for getting another 289 Cobra replica (ERA FIA car) instead. At that time I had not seen a replica Coupe - or it might have swayed my decision.

Looking at the SAS Coupe - it looks to be an exceptionally well built car. Love the tube chassis (my ERA has 3" * 4" rect tube chassis + X crossmembers and is VERY rigid).

Just curious about the "mid engine" vs traditional rear placement. Does this pose any negatives in the "356 value"? What about the Subaru motors? Not familiar with the "idiosyncrasies" of the 356 replica industry. I know for example, in the Cobra replica crowd, a Chevy powered cobra is a much tougher sell than a ford powered cobra. Many people look at a Chevy powered cobra, as a car without a motor, as the would only buy the car under the condition the motor would be replaced.

The 356 replica industry seems to be quite different. The majority were based on VW motors, and not actual porsche motors (correct?), and using either a VW, Porsche, or apparently a Subaru - is OK and has no impact on maintenance of value?

Any views from the 356 community on the "lost jump seats" in the SAS car, due to the mid engine format? Does not appear to have any negative impact on the "resale" value of the cars, as they appear to be in demand, and few or no used ones on the market.

I see a lot of comments on JPS and Vintage - seem to be the most commonly owned cars. Where does Beck fall in the "quality" and resale maintenance rankings? I see they too build a rectangular tube chassis, and appear to have a nice car. And .. they have a coupe project in the works for the end of this year or 2012.

Appreciate your comments. Would love to be able to get a nice Coupe to go with the cobra!! (dream).
Rick, You have just asked for a "History of the World, Part III". You might want to read through a few more threads on the forum. I own the only SAS mid-engine coupe produced so far so there are not a lot of folks with experience in this configuration.

Loss of jump seat is no big deal. I also have a workable trunk on both ends. Mid-engine gives good weight distribution. Plenty of power. Noise inside the coupe is modest. Subaru has an exceptional maintenance record. SAS cars wre of high quality. I have had no major issues.

JPS does VW-powered and a Subaru-powered rear engine coupes. I know little about them. Others will likely speak up.
Rick: I saw a sweet IM with a Subi engine at Carlisle, stunning looking car and a great install by Henry. As far which car, engine or builder it's a personal choice. If interested in a quality refurbished 356, Allen Merkin (Drclock)is the man to contact. Our group of motor heads admire all configurations of 356s, from Hoopty to the sweet Speedster with the 6cyl Porsche engine. We just adopted a number of MG replica owners, some with VW engines and one with a Chevette engine. We also have actual Porsche owners in our group and we don't look down on them, lol, actually my ambition is to stay in sight of Bigbird ( Tom Raymond's yellow Porsche Carrera 4) out on the highway.

Scott - where / when do you guys meet up with your cars? Would you mind if I dropped in with my FIA Cobra? Love all sports cars .. but the cobra and 356 are my two favorites. Right behind would have to be TR3's, MGA's & Healy's. I live in Coral Gables, so Fort Lauderdale is within striking distance!!
Rick: Well unless it's pre-arranged I don't usually meet up with anyone locally, however, if planned, I meet at The Tower's Shop Cruise in on Friday nights. The Cruise In is a weekly affair with as many as a hundred cars on show. From American Iron to Foreign Sports, real and replicas. I'm on the road right now but will look up the link to the Tower Shop's Cruise In when I get home, you maybe able to google it. The East Coast group of SOC members are planning a Run In The Smokies early September with a cruise to Ashville NC where we'll tour the Builtmore Estate, cruise the Smokie Mountains, dine in a Bavarian Restaurant and have a great time. The more the merrier, maybe we can get Tom Raymond to drive his bad ass Audi or fat ass Speedster, but Big Bird is always welcome.
