Thanks for reminding me. If I remember this correctly.... there was basically too much amperage going through the 1 fuse. So he put a seperate fuse for the air suspension(?).. I need to ask the shop again to confirm. You got me thinking now. But yes, no more blown fuses.

Most VW a/c mechanics will tell you that up to 230F is acceptable for oil temp, even though modern oils won't shear until the high 300's.  High 200's for oil temp are not uncommon for circle track guys.  If you really want to dial it in, laser temp guns are pretty cheap online, and cylinder head temp gauges are always a good idea.  In that way, the guess work is reduced, as you can check the before and after temp changes when you install the oil cooler.  A decent oil temp gauge is a good starting point.  Run the same course with the same ambient air temp before and after the oil cooler addition, both with and without a/c on.  Data logging is becoming easier and more important as the cost of modified engines continues to go up.

I'm not sure I understand why a/c would make it run hotter. Mine makes no
difference, even on the hottest days. My a/c evaporator / heat exchanger is
in the nose, cooled by an electric fan. It has no effect on engine oil
temperature. Are you sure the higher oil temp is not just the result of hot
days you use the a/c, cool days you do not?​ The only other thing I can
think of is idle speed. Mine idles slightly lower with a/c on, reducing
engine fan speed slightly. Modern cars can kick up idle speed to
compensate. Not enough of an issue for me.

All a/c systems increase engine load.  The larger the a/c compressor, the more cabin heat is removed, but the greater load on the engine.  The energy required to power the compressor is no longer available to turn the drive wheels, effectively making a  3-cylinder engine from a 4-cylinder model.  Higher ambient air temps also mean increased oil temps. When oil temps are marginal, those additional factors can raise them to unacceptable levels.

As Jim said AC increases engine load. I'm positive the AC is the issue...every time I've ran without AC on temp is fine. Yesterday I drove for approx 40 min (AC off) and temp stayed at a certain level the entire time...no problem. Clicked on AC and within 5 min temp started to rise.

 

Your right it idles lower with AC on. Another option, so I'm told, is a bigger alternator pulley....probably in conjunction with an oil cooler.

I would say its "ok"…..not as good as what normally comes stock on Johns cars. (which I have driven a couple) But then again, its set up as more of a cruiser so I'm fine with it.

I'm a big fan of your MangoSmoothie! And if I'm being honest, your car made me seriously consider a similar build to yours.

 

I don't think I have any pics of it in the up position….I'll try to get some this weekend. There are some pics and info earlier in the thread about the setup….if you have any specific questions just ask.

i've been toying with the idea of a hydro-torsion setup on my bus too.  can you point me to the build you are referring to?
