Anyone know how to tell the year of VW axle or find markings to correctly order parts to fix a leaking rear axle? The deep-groove ball bearings are pitted and the inner rings worn, i can't find any markings or part numbers. Do I have to punch put all the sealing rings gaskets out of the cover to find it? This is a Becks Spyder #54B.

Chad....I assume you have a swing axle tranny.....The wheel axle bearings are located on the brake drum end of the axle.....You have probably removed the drums and seal housing.....DO NOT punch anything....Get a Haynes VW repair manual or a copy of John Muir's "How to Keep Your VW Alive"......Within either of these, you will find a drawing of a bearing extractor device made from two 5/16" bolts, nuts, and a piece of flat bar.....Buy several extra bolts, as you never get lucky doing it the first time....Use grade 8...they're stronger, and bend less....Extracting the bearing will damage the ball cage unless you have better luck than I...Inspect the spacer the seal lip rides on...If it has ANY wear, ding, scratch, etc, get a new one....Don't try to "fix" the old one....It just doesn't work....

The axle tubes do not have to be removed....Best if they are not removed, as the shim/gasket stacks will usually take a dump when this old....
