Steve restored a 66 (I think that was the year, memory a bit askew)tri-power 427 corvette roadster for a fellow about 15 years ago. The car had hid a bridge pillar "at speed" in the 70's. Hit hard enough to kill the driver and launch the engine out of the frame. It took three pickup loads to bring all the busted pieces to Steve. There wasn't a part of that car that wasn't hurt. Most of it hurt real bad. But the market was high so it was worth saving.

Took Steve two years to restore it. A fair amount of that time was finding the right frame rail (as one was beyond repair) and a set of matched glass as the car had nothing left. This was one of the few cars he did in lacquer, at the customer's request. Steve thinks lacquer is right up there with bias ply tires. When he was done, this car was stupendous. Silver, black stripe, black interior, 427 tri-power, four speed, alloy side-pipes, factory top delete, radio delete, and heater delete car. Quite unusual. These usually were race cars.

Guy drove it for a few months and stacked it up hard in a ditch. Steve told him the car wanted to be black. So the second time around, it wound up black. Still running around that way, so I guess he was right. When in doubt, paint it black!
