Oliver, I don't think it's necessary on a stock engine, but if you go bigger, and increase the horsepower, the addition of a sump is a good idea.
I put 120,000 miles on my 1970 beetle (dual carbs & header/extractor)and it was still running decently when I sold it. No sump-heck I didn't even have an external oil filter.
Having said that, with my new high performance 2275 I went with a Gene Berg sump, extra external oil cooler/fan, and external oil filter.
