Hello Gang,

In November I saw this ad:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/cla...etail.php?id=1715527

5 Bivens with tires, lugs, and center caps for $2500.00 - Not a bad deal but still pretty steep. I decided I'd sleep on it a few days.

They sold before I could convince myself that I really needed them. I snoozed and loozed. The good news is that they are back again!

Bad news is that there is a new seller and a new price:

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/cla...etail.php?id=1722102

At 5k they are safely outside of my price range. I knew they were limited in number, but I could do a lot with 5k.

I spoke with the new seller, hoping to negotiate a reasonable price. He is very 'FIRM' on his price. When I mentioned the previous ad on the samba for this exact set up, he said that he didn't know what I was talking about.  (Who? What? Where?) He said he wasn't aware of the previous ad and that he bought them from a customer in San Diego.  He assured me that he payed much more than $2500.00 (His words) "At $2500.00, that would be a steal..."

Frankly, what he paid is between him and the original seller. None of my concern. Whatever he paid, they are his and he can ask what he wants. No harm. No foul.    He took the risk, he deserves to fetch top dollar.

I hope one of you SOC members with deeper pockets can snatch 'em up.  If one of you should stumble upon them, I just wanted you to be informed.  Caveat emptor.

Too rich for my blood. (/me folds my hand)

Ted

Right now? Too much.

They were released by SMC pretty recently so they are still trying to fetch $3200.00! for a set of 4. Makes those 2500 Bivens seem pretty reasonable! Although I have to admit, I like the grey TecnoMagnesio a little bit more.

Still outside of my reach.   I could do a lot of stuff with 3200.00!!

Live and learn,
Ted

Yep, you'd really have to be in love to spend that kind of money for wheels.

I've been watching the Velocity Channel  B&J auction.  Apparently there are no limits as to what can and IS spent on cars.    If you want it badly enough......  Do we have any Ron Pratts in the group?   He was building 45 houses A DAY.    I did a little rough calculating and he might have been netting 1/2 million A DAY (maybe more maybe less but plenty) .   A fellow would be challenged to spend it quickly  enough.

Thread drift.....   Wheels and tires really do make these cars and I'd like to do something but some one would really have to do a sell job for me to spend that kind of money.  Maybe seeing them in person?  Carlisle maybe??

I think that's what Max Handly ran on his bad ass outlaw.

I just can't justify 3k in wheels... can I?

T

Well, Scott Sloan's outlaw IM, to be exact .   Max only owned it for a while.

That was one very nice car.

Doh. You are 100% correct. Scott did the leg work and created a masterpiece. I gathered my data point from a quick (halfassed) search. I saw the photo and read the name next to it. My mistake.

Thanks for the correction!

That depends; how bad do you want to have one of the most badass outlaws around?

Another alternative. One of the few non-OEM wheels I like on a 356. These are the aluminum spare wheels supplied on the 944 Turbo. I used to think they, too, were super expensive, but I'm seeing a few (expired, sadly) offerings on eBay for under $200 per wheel. So, hard to find, but apparently reasonably priced if you can.

This was on a real Speedster I spotted at a car show back in September. And oh -  quick quiz time - anyone recognize the hard top?

Glaspar. I had one on a JPS-- beautiful, but didn't seal for spit.

I've got the billet AL Biven's wide 5s on my car. Mine came off of George Brown's car when it was sold to a guy in Houston who wanted to run moon caps and chromies (?). The wheels were selling for about $3k/4 at the time, and I paid $1800/5. When I got them, they were really rough from the abuse they had suffered. But in a case of really warped perspective, I thought I had stolen them. I spent probably 40 hours brushing them "just so" with 600 grit wet-or-dry and scotch-brite green pads, and then another $300 getting them clear powder-coated. It was right about then I knew I'd lost my mind. When I first started looking at this the hobby, I thought I'd be able to get a complete car for what I've got in my wheels and tires, but my choo-choo had gone around the bend some time ago.

The Technomagnesio wheels Max put on Scott's car are made of Magnesium and weigh about 12 lbs per, which is lighter than just about anything out there. However, Most wide 5 disc kits are crazy heavy, so everything gained with a 12 lb wheel is lost with a 10 lb hub/rotor. Even with a CB kit (with AL hubs) a wide 5 set-up just weighs more than a Porsche 5 drilled hub. There's a reason Porsche got away from it when they did.

From a form-follows-function standpoint, the widended Porsche spares on 911 hubs/brakes are all that. Weight in the hubs/wheels/tires is unsprung weight, and greatly changes the way a car feels. Lighter= better. A guy can spend a LOT of money trying to make something look cool AND work well. You've got to stop somewhere, and everybody's sweet spot is going to be different. Contentment is a great thing.

However, in the whole "too much is just about right" vein: if I ever built another car (what am I saying?) it'd have a full 911 front suspension, 944 brakes, those wheels, that top, and a BIG 'ol twin-plug, dry sump Type 4.

The car in the picture is gorgeous.

Don't kid yourself, Stan - your wheels are gorgeous. You did an amazing job on them.

The story of the Alex Bivens wheels per the 356 registry...
Alex did a lot with custom and hot rod cars. He was approached by a friend and customer to see if he knew who could supply a billet wheel for the 356 community. Al knew a friend who worked for Boyd Coddington who would supply the wheels basically out the back door. While not a full billet wheel a stock 356 center section was scanned into a program. The big issue was a 5.5" hoop is not a commonly made size. Alex faithfully soldiered on thought the tough development months/years of these wheels. A limited number were made before Al passed away. The quality and rairity of the wheel command a premium.

A 5k premium? Not from this train conductor!

6 inch rims custom made by the same guy who CNC'd for Bivens.  The are cut at the Coddington Factory.  6061 billet 11 lbs of jewelry.  Exact copy of the 944 Turbo spare I purchased from eBay.

Marty - was the CNC guy named Mike or was it another operator? I wonder if Boyds son, Chris will keep the wheel shop running? The wheels shown above are beautiful. If you break it down per wheel, 5 k with tires and lugs and center caps isn't that horrible.
