Getting ready to put the engine in. (bought Marty's old one, thank you Marty!) Two questions: 1. The four mounting nuts and bolts, what size are they and can I use a grade 8 or does it have to be a specific vw part. The engine is a 1915cc the transaxle is a 69, I believe. Also, want to get a new throwout bearing, what to order??? Marty gave me the clutch with it so I plan on using it since the engine only had around 3000 miles on it.Actually, three questions, not two. I have noticed that on the cars I have looked at they have ventilation, screened in hole behind the engine (behind the engine, meaning toward the fr of the car, but in the engine compartment)Any good clean looking ideas on that???

For the firewall hole.
I installed a Detmar 3" blower motor on the other side of the firewall and ran 3" rubber duct hose; the intake side goes down to a 3" 90 elbow with a screen and sits right under the drivers side door. The exhaust side goes to the firewall hole and is finished with a louvered dryer vent.
The blower motor is wired in to my remote oil cooler fan, so it goes on when the fan does - around 180 degrees. Otherwise, the hole stays closed unless I'm turning higher RPMs.
I believe those are 10 mm bolts but I'm not sure of their length so, go to a VW specialty shop and get the correct bolts. CB Performance, CIP1 and many other places carry them.

Chances are you have an early clutch. However, Look at the clutch pressure plate, does it have a steel ring attached to the pressure plate where the transaxle input shaft would go??? IF so, it's set up for a late throw out bearing Next, look at your transaxle. Is there a steel tube around the input shaft attached to the inside of the transaxle bell housing by 3 bolts??? If so, the transaxle needs a new or late style throw out bearing.

Here's what to do. If you have the old style throw out bearing and the steel ring on the presssure plate, simply remove the steel ring. If you have the steel tube surround the input shaft and it's attached by 3 bolts to the inside of the transaxle bellhousing and you don't have the steel ring on the pressure plate, let me know, I have one and will send it to you if you pay postage. In this case, buy a late throw out bearing
The lower two are studs screwed into the engine. This helps aligning things when you mate the engine to the trans.

The upper one near the starter has a special D-shaped head that prevents it from turning and you install the nut inside the engine compartment.

On the upper driver's side you may have a threaded insert in the engine case. If so, you install the bolt from the transmission side.
