I was gonna post elsewhere when I remembered that Angela, Alan, and Gordon pretty much know everything and could probably pass along the info that I need without biting my head off in the process.

Has anyone got any info on the various classes run at Bonneville, especially the classes that would accept a vehicle based around the VW engine/pan/suspension/etc.?

In looking through all of the rare/weird/high performance stuff on hand that might go into the mid engine birdcage chassis, we found a whole lot that won't be used, nearly enough to build another car. Now I'm looking for an excuse to maybe put something together for competition and though that a wonderful road trip and an experience to remember might be in order.

Any info on the available classes for such a vehicle? Maybe a link to the rules and requirements? Possibly a dedicated forum? Anything at all that might either spur me onward or place a reasonable road block in front of the idea?

Thanks ! !

here is the link to the Southern California Timing Association that sponsors 'speed week' at Boneville and Lake Mirage. if you look under the 'pre entries' this year, there is a Ghia entered under 'Larry's Old Volks Home' out of San Bernardino in California so there must be some sort of VW class.

here is a link i found about the Ghia

hope this helps,

Evidently that Ghia has a five speed transmission connected to a four speed VW transaxle and a Rabbit engine ! ! That's like having a four speed rear end and five forward gears in the trans, but considering that the VW fourth is pretty much a one to one give or take, the lower gears would be useless.

LOVE to see how it's layed out and how it all fits in there ! ! !

Anyone got any links or pics of this thing?

From what I've managed to find so far, the tech is pretty much what we go through with the SCCA, if you keep it under 130 and the car is street driven and registered, the big money items like a fire suit and a full-on fire system aren't necessary. This honestly seems like it could all work out, I've just got to convince a couple of the guys that it'll be fun to share the driving and expense just to watch me disappear into the hot salty distance, then reappear again using a different route . . .

Oh sure, I SOUNDS easy, but these guys are married and their wives are on to my tricks. Mothers, wives, and girlfriends always have been, even as a kid.
