We are all a bit cabin crazy up here and wrapped up in 49th parallel tape ...

As soon as the czar releases us we will be driving south

Hoping the border becomes less obnoxious as we have a family member who had a covid test that ended up being 3 hours late when he drove across and he got a  6K fine ... go figure..

Moral of the story, if you come back and they say the test is outdated, you have to tell them... ok then I am not coming back today... do not come into your own country, go back across the border to a hotel or to your relatives then come back another day...    ( the relative lives in Windsor and he was visiting his sister in Detroit, he is in his late 70's )

Throwing this out there to the Speedster Group.  As a former Speedster owner, now a buggy owner, ACME commissioned a build of a Valve Cover Racing Track.  We will have the track at Carlisle this year and if you are creative enough to make a Valve Cover Racer and want to have some fun, the track will be set up for the duration.  We will have a definitive challenge race (double elimination), but feel free to join - you gotta make your own racer.  If anyone is interested, I can send you rules and build specifications for your racer (max 5 pounds)= just about anything goes.    Pinewood Derby and Hot Wheels for the adults     Andy Burger, afburger@gmail.com

curved incline - VCR build rules also attached   based on area we will have, we have 6 4' sections of flat after the curve from the starting incline.  This image is general representation of an older track we used to borrow and use.   The new track is being finished this month and may include a hump and/or a jump optional sections depending upon how much beer is consumed during the final track construction

For those wondering what this track will look like with a transitions.  Here is the current build process - about 80%.  There is an additional 8' of sections to be added but the work shed isn't that long

The track is 4' high at the starting line with a 35% incline to an eased curved flat section.  Total length is about 28'.  This particular VCR racer in the video is at the 5 pound limit, made with a base EMPI chrome rounded valve cover.  It also has wood wheels and router bearings that is homemade from my brother Bill in North Carolina - the architect and creator of our track.

Our plan is to have a "cup season" at various events with trophies at each event and grand champion - even best of show at events so everyone can enjoy.    Click the video below to see the track in action as of 07-JAN-2022

Reserved at the hotel. Boy, they aren't making that easy this year.

"How best can we not actually talk to you today? Would you like a text instead? The website is the best way to book your room, How about a twenty-seven minute wait?"

Apparently the automated system doesn't recognize, "GO EFF YOURSELF!!!!"

Plus, they let the guy who recently retired from two decades of huffing paint answer the phones!! YAY!

Booked for Weds-Sun

I just spoke with Charity Sheffler at Courtyard Marriott when you call they have a new phone system which quite hasn’t been straightened out yet select the option for the sales office if she does not pick up leave a message she will call you back and make the reservation direct sorry for the inconvenience until They get things ironed out with new  phone system

I called the number you left and versus last year, where I believe I called Charity direct and left her a message to call back. She sent me an email that I was confirmed for my reservation so it was super easy.

I encourage anyone to follow Al's instructions and push the button for the sales office when you get to that point.

Thanks for trying to iron it out Al!!

Please folks, sign up for Carlisle Gate & Go ASAP. Deadline is end of March. As in the past, the more people we get who sign up as part of the Speedster gathering the more likely it is we'll get a free thing.

You want a NON-JUDGED SHOWFIELD Gate & Go pass; sign up here. Remember to go to the club affiliation drop-down menu and choose "Speedster Owners." Do this regardless of what car you plan to bring.

Every year I've been a part of this group we've gotten a free tent from Carlisle. This year, owing to last year's lower attendance, it costs $97.50

No problem! We got this. But free is better than $97, so if you're thinking of coming, sign up.

Here's the nitty gritty re the tent:

COST OF CLUB TENT
• Club tent qualifications are based on the following:
1) The total number of vehicles registered for the prior year’s event –
if your club had 25 or more vehicles registered last year, your club
is eligible for a FREE tent this year
2) The total number of vehicles registered by the Gate-N-Go deadline
of the current year’s event – if your club’s total number of vehicles
registered by the Gate-N-Go deadline is greater than the prior
year’s total and meets the number for the next larger tent size,
your club will receive the larger size FREE.
• Rental fee is $195.00 for a 20 ft. x 20 ft. club tent when your club’s
number of vehicle registrations is under 25.
SIZE OF CLUB TENT
• Club tent sizes are offered and determined by the number of vehicles
your club has pre-registered. FREE tents may be offered at the
following club vehicle registration levels:
25 vehicles = 20 ft. x 20 ft. / 50 vehicles = 20 ft. x 30 ft.
75 vehicles = 20 ft. x 40 ft. / 100 vehicles = 30 ft. x 40 ft.

Just 10?!  C'mon folks, it's time to celebrate the backside of the pandemic and join us for jocularity, merriment, and frivolity.  Oh, and cars, too.  Almost forgot about the cars.

Carlisle: I know of at least 9 possibles that have verbally committed but are sitting on the fence, surely it can't be the cost of gas as that's easily remedied by switching to cheaper lunch choices............ Come on folks let's get it done this week !

I drove my Ford F250 and trailer on the show field several years in a row.  They really don't care all that much once you've paid for a show field pass.

BTW:  Those show field passes are a real bear to remove (the adhesive is wicked sticky) so I would scotch tape mine to the windshield.  I don't think they really like that, but no one ever told me to do otherwise.

Carlisle room list 15 to date !

Sorry to put this in this channel - I thought there was another thread for this but can't find it...   Valve Cover Racing is approved with Carlisle Events to be on the Grandstand Stage under the lights in the evenings ..... Both Friday (Test and Tune), fun night casual and "play around some" with the track - and Saturday Night (the actual race event).   Thinking about 6:30pm official start on Saturday with tech inspections and the race will get under way by 7pm.

We are going to circle the stage with our dune buggies and you all with Speedsters should do the same if you want to join in.  Folks will bring food, snacks, etc., we will have the PA system active with music etc.  https://acmecup.com

Check out that link for full rules - and remember, skateboard wheels (Rubber) won't work well, if you build one like that, they won't do well unless you can shield those wheels with a non-rubber bumper somehow.   Trophies for 1st and 2nd place and BEST OF SHOW (the most creative), no fee.  Just fun.     Send me a note or give me a call if you all are interested or want to do your own group thing maybe later on Friday...     afburger@gmail.com  908-420-7373

UPDATE - three minutes after this post..... We are going to have a SECOND track available as well.  so there will be more chances to get small groups to race each other and "Test and Tune" your racers.

Carlisle Updates:  The hotel room block is about to expire with a number of rooms still available and i have asked that the hotel extend the block.  Please make your room reservations by the end of this week as once the room block is released it can be difficult to secure lodging in the area due to Carlisle weekend and other May events. Saturday night is Valve Cover Racing: The Manx Club has put a lot of time and effort into this fun event, they have been generous enough to invite the SOC to participate. (see previous post ). This year we are located just inside of gate 3 of the Show Field on the immediate right. Once again we are going with a casual schedule with early hotel arrivals on Wednesday and Thursday, Corry & Jeni Drake will lead those that like to drive on a Friday am cruise with a Winery stop along the way while some others may choose the Show Field. Saturday is, Carlisle Show Field  Day ! As in past years each evening produces the usual good times and adult libations !

Kind of an odd first post as I was reading a lot of information researching a Speedster kit for myself.  I am only 3 hours from Carlisle, but don't know much about it.  Will there be Speedster kits shown there?  Sorry for the dumb question, I honestly just started looking at the idea of a kit.  My other choices are a midyear Vette or Lotus Elise.

No builders will be showing an unstarted "kit" at Carlisle.

There will be at least 25 different cars, most likely examples from all existing builders, in attendance so if you're serious about buying and want a turn-key or to talk with individuals who have built their own cars then it would be worth it to show up for a quick education.

If, OTOH, you are choosing between a Speedster/Spyder, a Vette or a Lotus Elise and don't know a lot about any of them, I would probably jump on the Elise.

@DannyP posted:

I think 25 is a little optimistic. There will be 3-4 Spyders, a couple MG replicas, and maybe 10 Speedsters of various brands and configurations: Vintage, Beck, IM, JPS, CMC/Fiberfab, and maybe even a TR(Thunder Ranch).

There are only 20 or so registered rooms, so...

I went last year for the 1st time. I got to the show field on the first day, about 9:00, I stayed until around 2 that afternoon. During this time I saw 1 speedster and Ed’s Spyder in the feature car’s area.  I didn’t realize that they didn’t spend the day hanging out on the field, but went for drives, lunch, ect. You are probably better off going to the host hotel, you will see more.

Carlisle ......Thursday  we are hanging out at the hotel to socialize with some early arrivals on Wednesday. Friday Cory & Jeni are doing a Cruise and Winery stop. Saturday AM we'll cruise as a group from the hotel to the show field ~ The  Manx Club has invited us to participate in their Valve Cover Racing Saturday evening at the show field. ....................  Ed Erickson will be running the Saturday night Raffle at the hotel!  Raffle donation items do not have to be car related as adult beverages seem to be a popular donation! There are dozens of local eateries of all types to choose near the hotel for your choice of dinners.

Just two weeks until Carlisle weekend!  Call the Hotel @ 717 766 9006 . Select the option for the Sales Office, if Charity does not pick up please leave a message as she will.... call you back. Be sure to mention Speedster Owners Group.

There are 19 room reservations to date & we have extended the room block timeline to include you, at Courtyard by Marriot.  A free daily breakfast is Included with your room reservation and use of the hotel's Hospitality Room.

Sorry to hear that, Marty.

Friday cruise planned out by Cory and Jeni* can be an all-day event for those who wish it. The plan is to step off around 8:30 and head to Kings Gap. After that there's the winery, lunch in Gettysburg and then a visit to the museum and a battlefield tour. It's a "choose your own adventure" itinerary and turn-by-turn instructions will be provided for each phase which can take you further into the tour or guide you back to the hotel or the show field at Carlisle.

This event will be known as the Angela Lane Memorial Cruise. And yes, there are some good roads involved.

I want to take this opportunity to thank @Cory Drake for his work on this.

*[Update: correction, per Cory: "This is 100 percent Jeni's work."]

For those of you wondering about the Gettysburg Battlefield Tour, I haven't been there (yet) but a few of us went to the Antietam Battlefield and museum as a side trip on a bicycle tour from Pittsburg, PA to Washington DC.  The tour and museum presentation was outstanding and the walk through part of the battlefield was almost spiritual for us.  I've heard that the Gettysburg experience is even better.

Go - You'll not regret it for a minute.

And while you're there, buy a Senior Lifetime National Park Pass.  You'll be surprised how cheap it is and it'll last as long as you.

The Gettysburg Battlefield Tour can be with a park Ranger or a self guided tour anywhere from an hour to all day. These hallowed grounds where tens of thousands of "Blue & Grey" Americans laid down their livers is quite a moving experience. I previously lived a half hour away and no two visits were to the same by far.  One year there was a group of Civil War reenactors who were firing off cannons at the Little Round Top Battlefield...What an experience ! BTW in the town of Gettysburg there are some fantastic eateries to choose from. Returning to the hotel from Gettysburg it's a single right turn onto Rt. 15 north.

Gettysburg National Military Park (U.S. National Park Service) (nps.gov)

We did the self-guided tour of Gettysburg. Parking is on the side of the road for most of it. It's interesting for sure.

Karyn and I may be out on this part. My car is loud at park speeds and I would hate to disturb families on their vacation.

A lot of biker groups go to Gettysburg they are respectful " reverent" throttle wise.....

Carlisle ! Be sure to bring your Raffle Donation Items !  T- minus 10 days until the regulars aka the early birds begin to arrive on Wednesday afternoon at Courtyard by Marriot for Carlisle. The hotel is providing free breakfast vouchers at the hotel's Bistro for Friday Saturday and Sunday.

The Plans:  For the Wednesday early arrivals we'll head out as a group around 5:30 for dinner .....perhaps Bone Fish Grill, Pizza Grille etc. Thursday the remaining crowd will shuffle in for renewed friendships followed by dinner or decide to have a large group pizza and beer party at the hotel!  Friday AM Early free Bistro breakfast followed by Cory and Jeni taking us on the Angela Rose Lane Memorial Cruise stopping at a winery in Gettysburg and a casual afternoon in Gettysburg.  For the evening, head out on your own or smaller groups for diner and more socializing back at the hotel. Saturday AM free early Bistro breakfast then we'll gather in the hotel parking lot and cruise over to the Carlisle show field for the day. Arrive at Gate 3 and for those that do not have advance passes you'll need to stop at Reservations.  Then through the gate and the first right will take you to our show field location. Yes, everyone! Please be ready to enjoy. Carlisle raffle will be after dinner on Saturday. I think everyone knows the drill: You bring an item—could be anything from a swaybar to a bottle of wine to a detailer kit to a custom print or painting—put it on the table and buy a raffle ticket (5 for $10, I think). Then we pull numbers until everyone's won and grabbed a prize. The money goes into a special account Bruce started years ago to cover club expenses at Carlisle. It keeps the scene afloat.

After the raffle we'll do the awards for Best Actor, Best Country Performance By A Non-Country Performer, High Bowling Score, etc.

Thanks, Ed.  Where do all the early arrivers want to go for dinner Wednesday.  I know I'll be hungry.  I'll be leaving home a week from tomorrow and taking a three day trip up wide side visits to friends and family.

Did most of the prep for the car today - topping up of fluids, etc.  Need to center the steering wheel after setting toe.  I forgot to do that until after I'd taken a shower and wasn't interested in climbing back under the car.  After that it just needs a quick clean up and it'll be ready to go.

For everyone attending the weekend, leaving Carlisle/Mechanicsburg Sunday May 15 and heading south...

A friend has organized a brass-era car show at the Gettysburg Outlet Shoppes in Gettysburg.  There will be approximately eighty-five pre-1916 brass era cars on hand.  Admission is free.  Hours are 8:00 AM to 3:00 PM.  The Outlet Shoppes are located at 1863 Gettysburg Village Drive Gettysburg, PA.  Drive time is about 40 minutes from the hotel.  This should be interesting to see and a chance for some great photography. We can caravan there if anyone is interested.  There is also a good restaurant on the premises - Mela Kitchen @ Jack's Cider House - and they also sell some great hard cider.

Thanks for the replies.  Sadly, I have to work on Friday and Sunday, so I could drive out Saturday as it is only 3 hours away and have a look around.  Seems someone stated they only saw one Speedster at the show.  That would be a bummer.  I guess I could swing by the hotel at some point and see if any are there.  Been reading a lot about the different makers.  Leaning towards a Beck with Subaru with 5speed, but open to other ideas.

Thanks again for the comments earlier in this thread.  Looks of good information here.

Alan's right.  Last year we did cruises and if the person who posted the "only one Speedster" comment was there while we were driving, they didn't see the whole group.  This year we have a long Friday cruise and some of us may also do a drive on Saturday before hitting the showfield.  Here are a few I took - mostly of my new car - but you can see some of the others.Carlisle 2021-6Carlisle 2021-7Carlisle 2021-8

I haven't shown up at the fairgrounds since 2017 when we had just finished the new Spyder.

Last year was a mis-communication between @LI-Rick and myself.

We go to PA to visit the people, and the clown cars, and drive with them, drink, and eat.

I used to REALLY enjoy the AutoX and the vendors/swap area at the fairgrounds. It is a different crowd now, not old VW stuff at all.

Some of us like hanging at the fairgrounds and checking out all the other crazy cars.

(Quiz: What car is this?)

There is an auto-cross track and you can run it for a small fee. IT's a lot of fun to compete against cars in your own weight/power class, and the spectators absolutely go gaga over stuff like what we drive.

One year like 5 of us MG TD guys ran the course, one particular member, Bill Ascheman, built it TD as an auto-x car and actually won his SCCA division with it back in the day. He's since turned it into a hillclimb car complete with Ford 302....

(Photo: AutoX Paddock)

There's always a little crowd on the hill overlooking the track cheering folks on; if you've never tested the limits of your car's lateral grip, that auto-x track is a great place to do so (it's for safety, dear!). It's a very short track (2nd gear will do ya) and so dangerous mishaps are very rare.

(Photo: rare, but not unheard-of)

The Fast & Furious kids also attempt a "drifting" event which is actually hilarious to watch (albeit loud). Turns out it's reeeealy hard to actually control a car you're also trying to make skid.

There's the Low Car Limbo as well which is a total goof...

...which SoC members tend to do well in.

And this year there will be valve cover racing.

SoC will have a canopy and a table with a few extra folding chairs. Most bring their own camp chairs and we'll see about getting a cooler or two in there with some cold ones in it & snax.

Maybe we can even run the group up on the hill for a picture.

It looks like I am going to be cutting it to the wire to bring the Magnum to Carlise. I took the car into the shop 2 weeks ago to have the AC repaired. I also wanted them to look at a small leak in the oil cooler line while they had it. I would have fixed this myself but since they had the car I thought I would let them do it. The AC condenser turned out to be clogged and they sent it out to be repaired, in hindsight I should have ordered a new one. We kept getting the being finished tomorrow routine from the company cleaning the condenser. It finally arrived back today and that was good news and then I was told the mechanic broke the oil cooler end off while tightening the new line on. I was just told they ordered a new oil cooler and it will arrive Monday. I thought taking the car in 3 weeks before Carlisle would be enough time. At this rate I may not be bringing the Magnum. If not I may bring the GT40 replica, I was told it was going to be finished tomorrow. I had custom car shop lengthen the wheel base by 1.5" or so to make it the same length as the original GT40 instead of the Fiero wheelbase. The parts they had fabricated were several weeks late. I was surprised to hear they came in today. I am sure many of you have had similar experiences heading up to an event. Is this supposed to be the fun part? I hope to see you all next week. Oh yes, the enclosed trailer I usually borrow was sold and I wound up buying a new 24 X 8.5 enclosed trailer last weekend. Now to have a car ready and running to haul in it.

I took the Spyder for a nice , long ride today. Still tweaking the EFI(I didn't do much last year). It's running great, steering is the same as I put the old steering box back in.

The only mechanical thing I did was cut some pipe-thread fittings off my custom angled tube breather and replace them with welded-on AN-8 bungs. I made two new AN hoses for the valve covers.

Of course, welding on the breather necessitated stripping and repainting it. All done a few days ago and mounted yesterday. No more leaks from my crap hoses. YAY!

I have one tiny oil drip, I'll get to it when I swap the trans someday(and that drips too LOL!)

See you in a week!

I let Alan know yesterday that we won't be making it to Carlisle this year.  A few reasons, but perhaps the main one is the injury I suffered last year to my tailbone.  It hasn't healed as yet, and driving gets painful after a while.

I've tried a few 'sample' drives around here, hoping I could make a longer drive, but after a time it's a real discomfort to sit in the seat.  I've had physiotherapy, massage therapy, and rest, but so far, it's still a real pain in the butt, literally.

I'll raise a pint or two while all you guys are down there having the usual great time.  I am really going to miss not being there, and seeing you all.

Washed, vacuumed, and cleaned the truck today. Those dog nose-prints on the inside windows are slimy! Ewwww!

Then I washed the Spyder, got all the winter storage and dead gnat carcasses off. Fluids and tire pressure checked. Car is in the trailer. The enclosed trailer is so convenient.

I'm exhausted. See you Thursday.

Lane should be starting some major maintenance any minute, now......

Or hopefully......   He's already on the road to visiting relatives.

Or he's sitting in his driveway and practicing his "Royal Wave" like Prince William for all those waving peons in lesser cars along the way.  👋

No repairs needed.  Getting ready to grab some dinner in Lexington, VA.  Car is running great (knock wood).  Stayed at Tom Raymond’s place last night.  He invited some of his friends from the Wilderness Trail PCA chapter and the Coupe was a hit.  Go to their Facebook page for some pics.
