The days of glory are past...the question is, will they ever come back?

Many have moved on, perhaps never to return.

Now seems like a good time for our poet laureate @Sacto Mitch to say something pithy and wise and philosophical about the ephemeral nature of catching lightning in a bottle, and about how all good things have a beginning, a middle, and an end, etc.

I would hope his timeless verse would be wrapped in the tune of a Guns-'n-Roses ballad (perhaps"Sweet Child O' Mine"?) just to make it impossible to replicate, and hilarious as well.

No pressure, Mitch, but we're all counting on you.

I wouldn't say never to return, but the heyday for me is past for mostly age related conditions and other " stuff " to get done before I can't. We may do one more Key West trip in the Roadster and we're toying with one more Route 66 go. A current, mild rebuild on the existing airplane, with another in the wings needing completion with the same radial engine etc. We bought a travel trailer and spent most of last summer down East including Nfld and are set to go back to PEI in June/July. Just dragged the bugger back from Florida last week. Stayed at the Courtyard Marriott Shippensburg on the way down and back. The BSA needs a new valve cover gasket etc. etc. Miss you guys though. The roadster continues to run well and escalate in value nicely.

Actually. Dave always too good care of us and we were located on the showfield in the middle of everything.  But when the tuners were invited back for the weekend a number of our members said they didn't want to be close to the noise.  So, as requested, the Carlisle management moved us away from all that.  Notice the tuners are over on the opposite side of the fairgrounds.  It was our own doing, not for any other reason.

Ed commented:

OK the Carlisle field map is up & we're over in the margin again on account of our modest club showings the past few years. So it goes.

The weekend plans have been posted as they were created so you've been getting them a little at a time.  So, if Ed doesn't mind here is a summarized rundown all in one spot:
Cruise on Thursday will be the Early Bird Bank Run with lunch at Hinckles. Destination is first National Bank Museum in Columbia, PA with a $10 tour of the only mid-1800’s bank in America that’s been preserved in it’s original building. After that everyone can retrace the scenic route or hustle back to the hotel on the highway.
Thursday dinner will be on the deck at Theo’s Bar & Grill.
Cruise on Friday will set off at 9:00AM from the hotel parking lot on a no-highways, mostly backroads run to the Louise Arnold Tanger Arboretum on the grounds of the Lancaster Historical Society and the grounds of former President James Buchanan’s hone. Then we’ll cross the river and head down to the Moon Dancer Winery, which will fire-up their pizza oven for lunch during our tasting. Road time on this trip is approx 3 hours or shorter return by highway.
The afternoon is open - Carlisle showfield or free-time cruising.
Friday dinner is the traditional restaurant scramble (AKA wherethehell are we going) where everyone can choose their own restaurant of choice - there are many in the area.
Saturday is open to your own interpretation. Most everyone goes to the fairgrounds fairly early. As usual there will be activities all day including the auto-cross, drifting, the swap meet and plenty of interesting import cars, activities and food. We’ll have a dedicated tent with a table and some chairs. Bring a cooler and we’ll make it a party.
Saturday dinner at 6PM we have reservations at Snappers restaurant. We can all drive together and get separate checks. Everyone can order what they want off the limited menu.
After dinner, dessert will be pie and snacks (BYOB) to be served in the hotel hospitality room. Tickets will be sold for the raffle. Everyone is asked to bring something for the raffle and the profits go towards defraying any weekend costs.
Any questions check details earlier in this thread or check with Ed.
We hope everyone will make plans to join us!
It's a long year until we do this again so we hope to see you there.

Hey, I'm throwing this out to everyone in the Speedster Group.... Thursday night if you all aren't doing anything coordinated.  The Buggy Group (on site at the camping area) is having a massive Chili Dinner / cook off.  At least 5 types of chili will be served, and we will have more than enough to go around with all the fixin's, beer, and firepits and just VW stuff all over.  Let me know if you all want to pop over - 6pm - ish.  we are flexible but I wanted to see if you all wanted to check out some VW based buggies and have some great chili and homemade sauces, etc.    Andy

I can't make it to Carlisle, but the least I can do is to pass along my Award-Winning Chili recipe, stolen from Suzanne Campo at the 1976 World Chili Cook-Off (we were there!) and then modified over the decades to make it even more exciting.

See the attachment, and enjoy!  That sounds like a fabulous invite from Pete!

Just for the helluvit and as I developed an allergy to beef as I got older, here is the same basic recipe but with Pork substituted for the Beef.  After a few iterations, we found that adding the Bushmills Irish Whiskey really put the cap on the Bull, so to speak.  If you can't find Bushmills Honey Irish Whiskey (preferred), just add a tablespoon of honey along with the Whiskey.

THAT......    Is one really Kick-Ass Chili!

Gotta love a new Chile recipe. I recently modified my lifetime recipe to instant pot right about the time I discovered this wonderful Mexican spiced prep of soup meat at Winco. Another discovery is that rice and beans hold up really well to freeze/thaw/reheat. Better than almost anything.

So I make mass quantities, put individual servings in the Pork Bowl containers I get from Rosarita’s, pop ‘em in the freezer, and bobs yer uncle. One pressure cooker load makes 6-7 bowls (depending on how much I eat when it’s first done)

When the time comes, back in the IP with just enough water to float them, “Keep Warm” setting for 30 minutes, and they’re ready to eat with some grated cheese and onions on the top, just as fresh as it it was just cooked!

Well, THANKS!

I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.  Kathy just pointed out that you’ll probably have a hard time finding “Louisiana Gold” hot sauce, but Cholula’s Original is a pretty good substitute.    Everything else is easily found.  Please don’t substitute Bourbon for the Irish Whiskey - That would just make it weird…….

Both of those recipes, beef or pork, make up about a full medium-size Crock Pot and fill your house with wonderful Tex-Mex smells.   Or your Carlisle tent.  Or your car, on the way to…..

I am going to be headed to the Cocolin Mountain Orchard and Bakery tomorrow to grab a couple of pies - they have a mean strawberry rhubarb.

Any requests?

Someone asked what Special Edition did to the Ghia. The short answer is that the upholstery guy put in heaters in the seats. The longer answer is that Mike Fincher has been shaking the cartheitis out of it and taking care of a few small issues.  Rich’s build of this car is amazing!

Mike will be here Thursday and headed to a Carlisle with us Friday morning for the tour
