Hi,
From reading the classic car / kit press it seems that the French authorities do not like ( basically refuse) to register kit car in France.
Unless they pass all of the euro regulations!

Unless anyboby else can comment.
Perhaps they will allow a French based car to be used in the first place?
With the homologated V5C euro registration documents it should not be as hard as it was?

Can anybody else add to this?

Hi,
Why don't you try the French 550 site!!!!???? If anyone knows, I guess they do. There's always a thing called "petites mines" [ not sure about spelling ], it'a bit like the way we used to register basically unregisterable cars in the UK - ie Steal [ tut, tut ] an identity from the donor. Gracious me - the amount of Cobra replicas running around with Escort / Jaguar logbooks! There's a similar system in Germany with TUV. Another way is to use the UK identity. From your tag you appear to be English? If so, just register the sucker here in the UK and bring it back once a year for an MOT / Tax.

There's a similar enquiry from a French [?] guy on the "other " site who's buying a Vintage - why don't you get together and pool your resources?
I bought my 550 from Classic Roadsters, so I guess I'll be going the English route, even though my car will live in France.

Hi Barry,

The link to the French site is not a million miles away - it's on the home page for this site in fact!!!!

They don't seem to be very active - not many postings and I had NO response to my posting as a newbie. I DID post in English as my written French "est ce ne pas bonne", but I would have thought that I might get SOME response - after all, all those Johnny foreigners speak English, don't they?

Try to track down the "petites mines". Is your car built or do you intend to build it in France? If you build in the UK and REGISTER in the UK, shouldn't be a problem. If that's the case, get a V5 as old as you can afford. "Old Timers" are still tax exempt [ I believe ] in France.

If you are going to live anywhere North of Paris - I'd go the UK MOT / tax route.

Good luck either way

Hi Beachcomber

I have not bought the kit yet. I have to find out about registration to decide wether to buy the beetle here in France or get Martim & Walker to supply. I am resident in France so have no facility to build in the UK although I could build here with a UK reg. I live near Le Mans so my nearest port is Caen to Portsmouth (
