Caution: California Legacy plates

If I may ask what are Legacy Plates I know they are license plates but is that something in just California ?

Legacy Plates are in the style of the 50's era. Black with gold lettering. They can be ordered with a standard random # or personalized. When Terry Nuckels sold his Penny since it was going out of State he was gracious enough to give me his old personalized plates. It was a bit of a hassle transferring them but eventually got it done.

Yes Arden, they are a California thing. Through the DMV, You can order black plates with yellow letters and numbers to represent the plates that were available in the 1960’s here in California. It is a nice detail when you have these vintage appearing cars.

Ca plates from 1956 - 1962 were yellow (Kinda gold-ish) plates with black letters and then they flipped from 1963-1969 as black plates with yellow letters and numbers.

Thanks RacerX...............I didn't know that and will be mindful in the future.  I jumped the gun and got "MODL 550" for my future Spyder. I didn't know then that they have to go on a car within 30 days so I registered them on my Honda Element for the time. being. I get a few funny/puzzled looks with them on "Ellie" !!...............Bruce

People may be looking at your plates, then the Element and start scratching their head 😀

Yeah, we have the kind of thing here for registration of anything older than 30 years. But you can also use “period” plates on any newer car provided the plates were either registered to you originally, or haven’t been registered to anyone else for 5< years.

Utah went away from having annual plates in 80-something. First to black/white, then white black. Then the “Greatest Snow on Earth” and the Zion plates came out and they’ve been a variation of those ever since.

I have a license plate fetish. All my cars have period correct plates. I have a rare 91-92 only skinny font Ski Utah plate in my 92 968. And this took a little creativity, but it’s mostly legal.

I lucked out that 1955 protocol was two smaller letters and three numerals. I registered RS550 as a personalized plate and had a place that makes plates for movie cars make me a replica 55 plate to replace the typical red/white/blue collector vehicle plate.

Agreed.  We don't know the other side of the story, but based on what you say, the person you sold your car to has been less than honest and  forthright.  I could use other adjectives...

Just tryin’ to be nice. I did retain the front plate, so if they ever get stopped, the DMV will not reissue a single plate. They will lose the right to use the personalized legacy plate.

Weird. One stipulation Utah has on classic plates is that you have to have both plates to register them in your name. Which is why singles are $25-$75 on eBay and pairs, especially pairs in good condition, are $500 and up.

Huh. In NY, it is only required to have one plate for 1955 and 1956 ONLY, as only a rear plate was issued those years. So lucky that I happen to have a '56!

All other years require two so we'd be in the same boat as all y'all.

I think the only time Utah issued a single plate was during WWII. But nobody has a 41-45 car, so it doesn’t matter.

In Calif., If your doing a standard title change and registering a resident car, you normally do not have to show proof that you have both plates. Me and my family are beginning to pack for my retirement move to Tennessee. I came across my single plate and thought I would reconnect and mention the regulations on these special plates. After the move, I will be getting back into the thick of it and so looking forward to the fun of these Tupperwaremobiles

Sorry to drift a bit, but where are you moving to in TN?  I plan to retire to either east TN, west NC, or north GA in a couple of years.  Also, you'll be very close to our Tour de Smo' stomping grounds.  Feel free to PM me if you don't want to answer here.
