Hello All,

Been a long time since posting, but I have been lurking steadily. As some of you may know, I sadly sold my JPS Coupe last summer to fund College for my Daughter. That has been going great, given the challenges recently. I sold the car to a member here and when I did, as a favor I let him drive away with my black legacy plate on the back. This was to be a very short term loan,  just to get him home to San Diego without being pulled-over. So as I waited, and messages were sent and promises made, it became very frustrating. The new owner said he was having problems with DMV. Funny, I have bought and sold 2 cars since this transaction and they have been relatively quick with the paperwork.  At one point I was going to report it to DMV as stolen, but talking with the Clerk they informed me that once it leaves your property and the new owner has registered the car, the plate has been officially “ Surrendered”. Lesson learned: If you love your black legacy plates, don’t let them leave your place. I was going to use them on my next Coupe, but I will have to be happy with one namesake plate hanging in my garage.

Regards,

Brian

Pennsylvania you can register actual old "Vintage" plates if in the year of your vehicle.

Yeah, we have the kind of thing here for registration of anything older than 30 years. But you can also use “period” plates on any newer car provided the plates were either registered to you originally, or haven’t been registered to anyone else for 5< years.

Utah went away from having annual plates in 80-something. First to black/white, then white black. Then the “Greatest Snow on Earth” and the Zion plates came out and they’ve been a variation of those ever since.

I have a license plate fetish. All my cars have period correct plates. I have a rare 91-92 only skinny font Ski Utah plate in my 92 968. And this took a little creativity, but it’s mostly legal.

I lucked out that 1955 protocol was two smaller letters and three numerals. I registered RS550 as a personalized plate and had a place that makes plates for movie cars make me a replica 55 plate to replace the typical red/white/blue collector vehicle plate.

RacerX. Sorry about your bad experience. That’s really, really bad form. And why I never let anyone drive a car I don’t own with a plate registered to me. Ever.

Agreed.  We don't know the other side of the story, but based on what you say, the person you sold your car to has been less than honest and  forthright.  I could use other adjectives...

In Calif., If your doing a standard title change and registering a resident car, you normally do not have to show proof that you have both plates. Me and my family are beginning to pack for my retirement move to Tennessee. I came across my single plate and thought I would reconnect and mention the regulations on these special plates. After the move, I will be getting back into the thick of it and so looking forward to the fun of these Tupperwaremobiles

Hey Lane,

Let’s power drift! We had a house built just outside of Johnson City in Jonesborough. Everything you need and the Smoky Mountains 20 mins. away. There are a lot of tax advantages to Tn that will put you ahead of the game. That would be great to see your new Coupe in person, no matter how insanely jealous I end up. We will be there in January 2022 full time. I have a great guy who was our Realtor/ Builder too if you need it.

Regards,

Brian

To Brian (Racer X), Please contact me upon your arrival in TN. And Welcome to the land of twisty roads, no front license plates, no state income tax, and gas half the price of most places in CA ! Yeah, another reason to get Lane to J'boro !

...just hope that Tennessee isn't over run with the same political mess that people are fleeing from in California...

Now as a 7 year resident in East Tennessee, I can honestly say more and more "outsiders" are moving in. While natives are friendly, courteous and hospitable, it seems this seems to be waning like good moonshine being diluted with water. Not to mention where the "outsiders" are from but attitudes and bad manners are on the rise. I fear the day some "outsider" honks his horn at some "hillbilly" and gets shot since Tennessee is an open carry state, no concealed weapon permit needed. Durn revenuers and forieners ......
