Hey all-I'm getting set to re-install my lexan windscreen and I'm looking for a suitable mirror. I've looked a lot, and the best I've found is a jaguar/Aston mirror from some site in the UK, but when I really checked into it, it's way too big. Mercedes SL 300 mirror, same thing, not to mention, they're $150 solutions to $30 problems.

Im looking for something that mounts with a 2-3 bolt flange. I think the Fibersteel mirror looks half-assed with that bolt on the dash. Also, as much as I love Raydot's I don't think they'll work with a full width screen. (Nor would it look good, IMO.)

Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

Damn, how'd I miss that. I know I looked at Victoria British in my search. I think that's where I saw the Jaguar mirror.

Thanks, Gordon, I owe you a beer!

I'll have call them and get some dimensions, then play with my mirror to verify that that square one will have a tall enough stalk to clear the clamshell.

You might also consider a motorcycle rear view mirror, if you can find or fabricate a dash mount for it.  They come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes.  Mine is a MC mirror mounted with a center support adapter and is just the right size to fit the view between my headrests.

I have this mirror if you're interested. It's a spun aluminum cone and is 4" in diameter. It mounts close to the surface though. The black area is steel with a 1" or so mounting/pivot bolt.

No idea what it's from.20200528_06433820200528_064408

There are 2 mirrors commonly used by the manufacturers.

One is a Cobra dash mount rear view, available from places like Finish Line accessories.  It is ready to use out of the box.

The other is an early '50s Bug mirror with the shaft cut short and threaded to 8mm

Looks like a Raydot's reproduction. I like the way they look with solo sindshield and hard tonneau covers. Full screens, not so much. The cobra one Carey posted will be perfect.

That is the Raydyot knockoff from Tourist Trophy. Nice piece, but to make it work with the plexi screen you have to mount it way back, over the edge of the dashboard. It's not totally goofy but it's also not totally right.

Doing mine again I might try the MG TD mirror. Looks short enough. One bolt. Suitably compact and period correct.

I'm going to order the one Gordon posted. It's, like, $10. I feel like it's not really tall enough. But so far the Cobra one is most likely the winner.

I also have to decide on Monza vs Aston-style caps for my new tank. It came with an Aston cap, but the Monza is closer to original 550.

Hey, can anyone do me a favor and save me a trip to my storage unit?

Im getting ready to order my gas cap and I'm pretty sure it's a "2 1/2" ???

can anyone verify its not a 2.75"?

Im pretty sure I measured my original one, but... OMMD.

Old man memory disorder.

Think ive settled on a Monza-type, but that may change at the last minute.

Original VW tank:

OD of the filler neck is 2-1/4”

OD of the VW gas cap is 2-1/2”

Thanks Gordon, but I'm talking about the flip-tops on Spyders. But after further consideration, I need to verify all the dimensions, not just the filler ID. I don't want to buy a cap based on the filler neck only to have it too large or too small for the hole in my hood.

Looks like I have to peel myself up of the couch and go down there. May as well go for a drive while I'm about it.
