I finally scratched another thing off of the list, rear debris shields. The area in front of the rear tires always collects all forms of road debris. With the summer tires the collection is even greater.

So I made a couple of these out of some .03"ish aluminum. I gave them a steel wool and oil finish.

Rock shield 2

Each side is made from two pieces riveted together. I was going to also rivet them onto the car, but I wanted them removeable, so I used the same type of bolt as what's holding the clam shell latch. I did seal the holes in the fiberglass. I might even put a layer of a clear plastic film, that we use to protect carbon fiber bikes, in between the fiberglass and aluminum.

Now the aluminum makes the rest of the wheel well look kinda Mikey Mouse. Of course I have other ideas for some more wheel well/engine compartment tins.

Rock shield 4

Now I need to make some rock guards for the rear of the wheel wells both front and back. I do live in the land of gravel.  As you can see, I'm still sporting the wooden tires on the steelies.

Those folds do stiffen things up. I'm going to use a thicker aluminum for the rear rock guards/mud flaps. There will be no folds in them.

I've seen that brush idea on the originals. In pictures of course. It's a clever "gasket" of sorts. It will not work on mine. I have some ideas though.

I also need to make some sled tins and I want to isolate the muffler heat from the engine compartment. I'm not trying to be like the originals. I'm just trying to make it as best as it can be.

Hmmm...  That gives me an idea about the Coupe.  The rockers go under the car to connect to the chassis, unlike the originals, and they tend to catch stuff as well in front of the rear wheels.  It looks rather unfinished, so I have been thinking about truck bed liner or something I could spray in, but this looks better.  the picture below is of the right rear wheel looking forward.

Use some universal thin plastic mud flaps, trimmed to fit, and extending down past the inner fender by a half-inch or an inch. That should keep crap out of there, but you'll have to go pretty high up the inner fender.

Use some CAD(cardboard-aided-design). You may be able to go to a sign shop and get something from them. Maybe even some black Coroplast, which is hollow like corrugated cardboard, and is durable and lightweight.

Dear Police Cruiser and/or Bus Driver: And paint your wheels some other color. Thanks.

”Police Cruiser,” huh?  Methinks your guilty conscience is making you anxious. 😈

Don’t listen to him Lane. Wheels painted body color are an EXTREMELY RARE Factory option.

FoaF Ernie (whose clamshell-less 550 I’ve posted before) finished his roadster restoration last year.

Found out his had the painted wheel option.

(But I have to admit I agree with Danny. Other than a few red cars with gold wheels I love, anything but silver wheels looks weird to me. Looks “fleet sales” to me. Especially black wheels)
