Reminds me of a race in Tennessee when I was competing with the Tennessee style dirt track machines. A " brand new" driver showed up and was allowed to drive with his "home-made" crash helmet. A real jewel and has been a great memory to talk about with...Frank Rice., co-builder, race engineer, mechanic and friend.

The helmet was an aluminum cooking pot with a leather thong to hold it on!!! I can still see it today! A very proud, young mountaineer an future NASCAR to be driver. One has to understand that the track was located in a mountain swag on the border of Tennessee and Kentucky!

WE went home with a new track record and winnings, but was very glad to go home in one piece. All the drivers complained that our #3 smelled "funny". A later discussion for Carlisle.
Mike, if you must know the truth...

Well, my #3 smelled funny for many reasons. Us old Mountaineers mixed our own engine fuel. My was old Mobile Oil's Purple Power mixed with ether and/or Wynn's Friction Proofing nitro fuel additive. Spectators would fall asleep seated at the entrance to number one turn! Blue balls of fuel/ether/nitro mixture would roll out the exhaust and bounce along the track as the engine was "breathed" before accelerating through the turn.

Brian,

Your Helmet#3 looks almost identical. This good old boy didn't have the handles on his pot, but had punched holes above the rim to attach the thongs.
