Hi everyone. Brand new to this group and just wanted to say hi. I have always loved Porsche automobiles and have been fortunate enough to own 7 over the past 20 or so years. (928S, 4 different 911s, Boxster and Cayenne Turbo)

I have always loved the Speedster, but owning one was out of my budget. Well, this year I finally decided to just pull the trigger on a replica. I had been researching this since 2009 and watched the quality steadily improve to the point where I am ready.

I have looked at what must have been well over a hundred replicas and have visited several facilities including Kirk’s place in Hawaiian Gardens in roughly 2010 and the new Vintage Speedster in Scottsdale last year. I worked on F/A -18s in the Navy, so you can say I am a little OCD when it comes to attention to detail things.

Anyway, I finally decided to go with a remake / tribute of the James Dean Speedster. After consideration, I am having Vintage in Scottsdale build the car. My plan is to document the build and do a cross country drive in the car immediately after its completion in late September. I will be starting in Scottsdale and following Rt 66 when possible including stops at the Dean family farm and James Dean Museum in Indiana. I am documenting the process on a page called Speedster Dreams if you had any interest in following along as we get started as I don’t want to spam this group with too many posts.

Well, that is a long winded way of saying hello, but at least you know a bit about me. Happy to be here and look forward to participating!

Welcome, Patric.

A word of caution. Although the Speedster replica can be made into a very capable cross-country conveyance, this is usually not accomplished until about the third season of ownership.

Even the most fastidious Speedster builders find problems in fresh, brand new builds 10, 50, 200 miles down the road. It's the nature of the hobby, given the parts suppliers we live with and the plain facts of life with a hand-built car based on 75 year old technology.

I think Dean always rode with his mechanic (Rolf Wutherich).  I'll volunteer for trip as right seater!  You'll officially then be able to paint "Old Bastard" on the side (I know that was his 550 Spyder).

Good clip on the "curse"

You need to find one of the old (and rare) SOC engine grill badges -
