Members - what experience is out there on emission contolled engines for a Spyder. To be street legal in Australia a Fuel Injected engine with an Oxygen sensor and catalyst is required. What is the best solution and most cost effective? Type 1 with aftermarket EMS, a Brazillian or Mexican late model beetle engine or a Type 4 engine.

Advice appreciated

Nolan Motorcycles have different rules. Car makers spend millions to get engines to meet emissions, by tuning start up conditions and accel fuelling etc. It is not just a simple matter of putting aftermarket FI and catalyst on. My prference is to find a new or recon FI engine from late 70's US car or a late 90's mexican or Brazillian car.

Thanks for the info on motorcycles, the only other suggestion is to look into the 1968 type III, 1975 and later type Is,type IIs and the 1974 type IV VWs with automatic transmissions, they had fuel injected engines. The manual "How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive" has a great chapter on VW fuel injection along with drawings that might help. If you can't get a hold of the manual let me know and I'll try and scan it and send it to you.
A 1975 or later California beetle/super beetle would have the drivetrain you seek, L Jetronic Bosch FI and a catalytic converter.

Beetlemex should be able to hook you up with a motor like this still, or you could seek one out. These have limited hp potential.

A 1975 or 1976 914 would also fit the bill for you, that was a D Jetronic Bosch ingection, with a cat. This is a Type IV motor, so it would weigh a bit more, but would have about twice as much power, and a 5 speed transmission if you got a donor car or complete drivetrain.

There is a cat in Georgia, name of Jake Raby, who is a type IV builder and is working on a fuel injection system that would be good up to over 150 hp

Hi Ken,
Where in Australia are you. There was a Beck sold here in Adelaide earlier this year but i believe that it was registered as a 1966 VW - not sure how he did that. It was even LHD. A friend of mine also has a McRae which is registered under historic reg - another shonky deal. There must be a way!!!
